Astolfo Granatum, firstborn son of the Chasseur-affiliated Granatum family, initially exhibited a timid and empathetic nature contrasting with his lineage's legacy of fighting vampires alongside humans. This kindness led him to befriend an injured vampire child, revealing family secrets. The information provided an opportunity for vampires to attack the Granatum home. Astolfo endured a multi-day torture session, forcibly Marked over twenty times, witnessing the violation and murder of his mother, his father's death, and holding his dying sister's hand. Roland Fortis led the Chasseur rescue that saved Astolfo, though his entire family perished.
This trauma forged an intense, obsessive hatred for vampires and a desire for their genocide within Astolfo. He dedicated himself to the Chasseurs, initially idolizing Roland Fortis as his savior. Achieving the rank of Paladin of Garnet at fifteen, the youngest paladin in history, his admiration for Roland later transformed into deep resentment and hatred, especially regarding comparisons. He views his role solely as exterminating vampires, declaring they "should never have been born" and must be eradicated to "make the world clean again." He justifies extreme violence, including killing humans who sympathize with vampires as heretics. His personality is characterized by quick rage, sadism, and disregard for human life. He reacts violently to being mistaken for a woman, touched without consent, or compared to Roland, though fleeting traces of his former gentleness surface around small children.
Physically, Astolfo is short and slender with fair skin and markedly androgynous features: a round face, small chin and nose, thin arched eyebrows, and large pink upturned eyes with long eyelashes. His straight, dark pink hair is parted in the middle, cut just below his chin, and covers his ears. He wears the standard Chasseur uniform: black pants, a cassock, a white harness, a purple ribbon-like belt, and white lace-up boots, accessorized with a red rosary (white in the anime), fingerless gloves, and distinctive earrings resembling vampire fangs.
His primary weapon is the spear "Louisette," or "Pillar of Justice," featuring mechanized capabilities fueled by Astermite. He can unpredictably extend its spearhead length during combat and, after a brief charge, cause its head to split open and explode. Astolfo utilizes Chasseur-manufactured injectable steroids ("Tonic") to enhance combat performance, despite severe health effects from overdosing like bleeding from the eyes and nose. He employs specialized flashbangs called "Aegis" to blind vampires and disrupt their ability to alter the World Formula. Relying on agility, speed, and cleverness rather than brute strength, his combat style uses continuous attacks to provoke opponents into vulnerability. While skilled, he is considered weaker than Roland Fortis.
Astolfo's relationships are defined by trauma and hatred. His bond with Roland shifted from worship to intense contempt following an unspecified betrayal during training, though he unconsciously relies on Roland for comfort during extreme distress. He maintains a connection with his subordinate Marco, who addresses him as "Captain" or "young master," though Astolfo often responds with physical violence. His hatred extends to all vampires, especially Noé Archiviste and Vanitas, encountered during the mission to Gévaudan. Insults towards his murdered parents provoke extreme rage.
During the Beast of Gévaudan arc, Astolfo leads a Chasseur unit. His actions demonstrate his violent ideology: he kills Dragoons who mistake him for a woman and attacks Noé upon confirming he is a vampire, reveling in the fight. He injects the Chasseur steroid to gain an advantage. Vanitas provokes him by mocking his appearance, comparing him to Roland, and insulting his parents, triggering traumatic flashbacks and sending Astolfo into a berserk rage. A confrontation with a Charlatan automaton remarking on his remaining Marks of Possession (only five left out of thirteen) causes him to break down, screaming and slaughtering everything nearby until restrained. Later, at the castle, he battles Noé again, injecting multiple steroids despite the physical consequences. During this fight, he reveals fragments of his past trauma – witnessing his mother's violation and murder. Overdosing on the steroids impairs him, and a subsequent encounter with Roland causes him to regress to his traumatized child self. He collapses, sobbing that his family's death was his fault, and passes out in Roland's arms.
