Description
Astolfo Granatum is a character from the anime The Case Study of Vanitas who serves as a primary antagonist during the Beast of Gévaudan arc. He is a young chasseur, a vampire hunter working for the Catholic Church, and holds the prestigious rank of paladin, making him the youngest individual to ever achieve that position at only fifteen years of age. His physical appearance is notable for its androgynous qualities; he is short and slender with fair skin, a round face, and large, upturned purple eyes. His most distinguishing feature is his straight, dark pink hair, which is parted in the middle and cut just beyond his chin. He wears the standard uniform of a chasseur, complete with a rosary, and accessorizes with fingerless gloves and a pair of earrings designed to resemble vampire fangs.

Personality-wise, Astolfo is characterized by an extreme and psychotic hatred for vampires. Unlike other chasseurs who may be portrayed as misguided or driven by a desire to protect humanity, Astolfo's mission is purely one of extermination; he hunts vampires for the sheer thrill of it, viewing the protection of humans as merely a coincidental byproduct of his bloody work. He displays a brutal, short-tempered, and sadistic disposition in battle, relishing the slaughter of his targets and often reacting with explosive violence to perceived slights, such as being mistaken for a woman or having his family insulted. Despite this ferocity, he shows a softer side when interacting with young children, who likely remind him of his deceased younger sister, Louisette.

The root of Astolfo's intense hatred lies in a deeply traumatic childhood event. As a child, he and his sister befriended a young vampire, an act of kindness that led to catastrophe when that vampire and his cohorts invaded the Granatum home. Astolfo was forced to witness the prolonged torture, violation, and murder of his parents and his little sister over several days, all while he was repeatedly bitten and marked. He was eventually saved by the paladin Roland Fortis, but the trauma of his family's death and his own powerlessness to stop it left him permanently scarred. This history drives his motivation to prove his strength by avenging his family through the mass murder of vampires, a desperate attempt to compensate for his childhood failure to protect them.

Within the story, Astolfo acts as a direct and violent foil to the protagonist Noé Archiviste. Where Noé seeks to understand vampires, Astolfo refuses to empathize with them in any capacity, believing they all deserve death without exception. His role in the narrative is often that of a chaotic and brutal force, complicating the main characters' objectives. His key relationships are defined by this past trauma. His dynamic with Roland Fortis is particularly complex; Roland is the man who saved his life and introduced him to the life of a chasseur. While Astolfo once worshipped Roland as a perfect being, an unspecified act of betrayal caused his admiration to curdle into intense animosity and a desperate need to surpass the older paladin. This rivalry is so consuming that Vanitas is able to easily goad and manipulate Astolfo by comparing him unfavorably to Roland.

In terms of character development, Astolfo is initially presented as a one-note, psychotic antagonist, but his backstory provides a tragic explanation for his bloodlust, showing that his cruelty is rooted in profound pain and a shattered psyche. This revelation reframes his actions not as pure evil but as the broken logic of a child who never healed from his loss. While some analyses find his character less developed than others in the series, his interactions, particularly vulnerable moments with Roland, hint at a more fragile and wounded individual beneath his vicious exterior. For abilities, Astolfo is a formidable combatant, wielding a unique polearm named Louisette, which he calls the Pillar of Justice. This weapon is named after his deceased sister and serves as his primary tool for hunting and killing vampires. While his intimidation and raw strength are noted to be inferior to Roland's, his skill and relentless ferocity make him a significant threat.
