During the operation, Solomon identifies a signal he believes marks the target on a Covenant ship. This detection proves to be a fatal Covenant trap; his vessel is destroyed immediately after he identifies the decoy, resulting in his death early in the mission, before Arthur-079's demise. The true asset retrieved later is revealed to be Dr. Catherine Halsey, the SPARTAN-II program creator, in cryonic hibernation. Solomon-069's sacrifice highlights the extreme dangers faced by Spartans in humanity's war against the Covenant. His designation "069" adheres to standard SPARTAN-II protocols.
