Wielding the rare Divine Blessing of the "Sage," granting him potent magical abilities, he secured a place as second-in-command of the Hero's Party. His true motive was restoring his family's noble status, intending to marry the party leader, Ruti Ragnason, and exploit her position for social advancement.

Extreme arrogance, narcissism, and delusional self-belief defined Ares, convinced his Sage blessing marked supreme intellectual superiority. This overconfidence masked his actual incompetence in strategy and leadership. He harbored intense jealousy toward Gideon Ragnason (Red), resenting Red's closeness to Ruti and role as the party's tactical core. Ares engineered Red's banishment by falsely claiming Red left voluntarily, a lie that fractured party trust. His poor decisions and ineffective tactics against the Demon Lord's forces led to repeated setbacks, driving key members—Yarandrala, Danan LeBeau, Tisse Garland, and finally Ruti—to abandon the party, causing its dissolution.

Ares's obsession with Ruti intensified after she resigned as the Hero to reunite with Red. He betrayed the remaining party, allying with the demon Shisandan to force Ruti's compliance. Confronting Red, Ares was immobilized by Tisse Garland's spider familiar. Red severed both his hands and delivered a fatal chest wound using Ruti's sword. Bleeding out, Ares begged vainly for help from allies or Shisandan. His final words expressed disbelief that Red succeeded while he, despite perceived wisdom and power, failed.

He received an unceremonious burial in Zoltan. Most former party members attended but held no sympathy, cementing his legacy as a traitor. His actions irrevocably disbanded the Hero's Party, with members relocating to Zoltan. Red confirmed Ares's sins prevented his Sage blessing from enabling reincarnation, ensuring permanent death.

Ares viewed Red solely as his "love rival" and ultimate enemy. He saw Ruti merely as a tool for social climbing, ignoring her hatred over her brother's exile. His manipulation and betrayal fostered universal animosity among former comrades, including Yarandrala (who physically assaulted him) and Theodora Dephilo (who refused his funeral).
