TV Special
Description
Koko, alternately named Coco or Pauley Cracker across Jungle Emperor Leo adaptations, features in multiple narrative iterations. In the original manga, this parrot is Leo's childhood friend who persuades him to lead the jungle by wearing his father Panja's hide. Tommy the gazelle serves as Koko's closest companion, with both supporting Leo's growth and reign. Koko's scatterbrained tendencies emerge when naming Leo's cubs through syllable reversal, occasionally causing confusion like mistaking Leo's son Rune for Leo himself.

The 1965 anime expands Koko's history, depicting him as a hotel owner's former pet parrot. His attempt to rescue captive birds, including a female parrot, ends tragically with most escapees perishing. This trauma fuels his erratic behavior, though his loyalty to Leo endures. He remains a comedic presence alongside Tommy, blending eccentricity with humor.

In the 1989 series *The New Adventures of Kimba*, Koko operates as an aerial informant, warning of jungle threats. He reveals prior ownership by a human named Nick, confined to a cage and limited to phrases like "Thank you, Thank you!" and "I know, I know!". Envying Tommy's freedom, he escapes during a hunting expedition.

The 1997 film *Jungle Emperor Leo* shows Koko announcing Leo and Lyra's twin cubs' birth. He later acts as their uncle figure, attempting to teach Lune to fly—an effort foiled by Lune's leaf-like wings.

The 2009 special *Jungle Emperor: The Brave Can Change the Future* reimagines Koko as a female hummingbird. This version secretly harbors affection for Leo, serving as his emotional anchor and championing his potential despite his insecurities.

Across all portrayals, Koko consistently delivers comic relief through antics while demonstrating steadfast dedication to Leo and the jungle community. His character evolves from comic sidekick to one with emotional depth through explored backstories and relationships.
