Description
John William Bancroft, known as Will, ran Rivulet Wood's orphanage with his daughter Nancy Schaal Bancroft. Following his wife's death, he raised Schaal alongside multiple orphans, enduring financial hardship. When military officials approached during the Civil War, citing his "special aptitude" for the Incarnate Project, he volunteered only after securing government funding for his orphanage. This act transformed him into a Nidhogg Incarnate—a 98-foot brown Western dragon. His new form featured armored scales, a forehead horn, a clubbed tail, immense strength, bullet-deflecting durability, inexhaustible stamina, fiery breath, and limited flight hindered by disproportionately small wings.
Serving under Captain Hank Henriette in the Incarnate Unit, Bancroft became a key asset for the Northern Union. He shared stories of Schaal with Hank and considered entrusting her to Hank's protection, but ultimately chose to safeguard her and Rivulet Wood himself. After the war, he returned to the village in his draconic body. Initially retaining his human mind, he gradually descended into feral behavior: nightly roaring, an insatiable appetite that drained village resources, and preying on livestock. This forced Schaal to close the orphanage and relocate the children.
Facing villagers' safety concerns and their proposal to restrain him with a bell, Schaal reluctantly agreed. Later, on a rainy night, Hank arrived to enact the Incarnate Unit's oath: "Those who lose their humanity shall be slain by their comrades." Recognizing his own deteriorating mind and wishing to protect Schaal and the village, Bancroft submitted without resistance, allowing Hank to kill him. Unseen by Bancroft, Schaal witnessed the shooting, planting deep resentment toward Hank.
Bancroft was buried near Rivulet Wood. A year after the Whitechurch incident, he inexplicably resurrected—his body decayed and wholly bestial, devoid of human consciousness. He terrorized the forest, killing animals and humans indiscriminately. Reports of his rampage reached the military's Incarnate Extermination Unit, "Coup de Grace," which deployed to Rivulet Wood alongside Schaal. During the confrontation, Bancroft attacked indiscriminately, failing to recognize even Schaal.
The Coup de Grace lured him with livestock and shredded his wings with a rotary machine cannon. As they prepared to incinerate his body, he advanced toward the village. Schaal intervened, firing Godkiller bullets. His body began disintegrating, yet in his final moments, a flicker of humanity returned. He recognized Schaal, reaching out with his remaining hand before collapsing as she held it. His form shattered, leaving only his fingers against her face. The military later confiscated his remains to prevent further resurrections.
