TV-Series
Description
Tohya Ebata emerges as a formidable cardfighter boasting exceptional unofficial match records. Initially positioned against Team Blackout, Danji Momoyama later appointed him its leader. Academically gifted from a young age, Tohya consistently achieved top grades. His grandmother gifted him a Vanguard deck on his birthday to encourage balance between study and play; he quickly excelled, winning shop tournaments. His parents dismissed these achievements, pressuring him to focus solely on studies. Following his grandmother's illness and passing, Tohya vowed to become a doctor. He viewed defeating Danji in Vanguard as his final goal before quitting the game entirely.
After losses to both Danji and Yu-yu Kondo, Tohya experienced significant mental turmoil. Fueled by resentment and influenced by Masanori, he aggressively targeted Team Blackout, defeating Megumi Okura and Yu-yu before burning the team's banner. Danji intervened, challenging and defeating Tohya in a cardfight. Through repeated matches, Tohya eventually defeated Danji, who then tasked him with leading Team Blackout as atonement, surprising the team members. As leader, Tohya initially attempted to single-handedly manage all responsibilities and repair the damage he caused before learning to accept support from others.
During his leadership, Tohya retained a habit of impulsive spending, particularly on booster pack cartons, often drawing admonishment for neglecting his budget. He later departed Team Blackout, passing leadership to Yu-yu to pursue personal goals. Invited by Jinki Mukae, he participated twice in the Deluxe tournament: ranking first in his group during the first tournament and second in Group C during the second. He defeated opponents like Riku Kumatori and Samuel Fredson but lost to Megumi Okura and Gui, the latter eliminating him in the quarterfinals. His cardfighting record includes off-screen victories against fighters such as Himari Kanoashi and Mondo Kirishima, alongside losses to opponents like Raika Koshiba.
Tohya uses Keter Sanctuary decks centered on the "Cloud Knight" ride line. His strategy emphasizes high-Grade-3 compositions to activate unit skills, compensating for lower shield values with draw power and effects granting additional shield. His primary vanguard, Apex Ruler, Bastion, empowers Grade 3 rearguards. His deck evolved to incorporate Grade 4 units like Apex-surpassing Sword, Bastion Prime, enabling restanding of Grade 3 units to optimize effects and mitigate costs. Later adaptations featured Sword of the Nation, Bastion Accord during his fight with Masanori. A promotional trigger unit named "OverDress Tohya Ebata" exists, featuring Draw/Shield booster effects and dual attribution as "Protection Magic, Prorobi".
Physically, Tohya has blonde hair tied in a ponytail and wears a white t-shirt under a red coat, a red-and-silver ring on his left hand, and a pendant necklace. Personality-wise, he exhibits maturity, responsibility, and a strong work ethic across jobs and medical studies, though he displays childlike preferences in food and deckbuilding similar to Yu-yu. Post-losses, his destructive actions revealed a vengeful side, later tempered by Danji’s influence. Leadership responsibilities rekindled his sense of duty, yet financial impulsiveness persisted even after leaving the team.
