Description
Tohya Ebata emerges as a mysterious and exceptionally skilled Vanguard fighter, renowned for outstanding records in unofficial matches. Initially positioned as a formidable opponent to Team Blackout, he challenges their leader, Danji Momoyama, in a high-stakes cardfight that serves as Yu-yu Kondo's introduction to Vanguard.

His background reveals a childhood of academic excellence marked by consistently top grades. Receiving a Vanguard deck as a birthday gift from his grandmother, who encouraged balancing study with enjoyment, Tohya quickly mastered the game, winning multiple shop tournaments. Parental disapproval insisted he focus solely on academics. Following his grandmother's serious illness and passing, he vowed to become a doctor. Learning of Danji's reputation, Tohya resolved to defeat him as a final achievement before permanently quitting Vanguard.

Losses to Danji and later Yu-yu triggered a significant psychological shift. Fueled by resentment and manipulated by Masanori, Tohya aggressively targeted Team Blackout, defeating Megumi Okura and Yu-yu before burning the team's banner as a symbol of their defeat. This destructive phase revealed a vengeful and unstable departure from his earlier maturity. Danji's return and repeated cardfights culminated in Tohya's victory. Subsequently, Danji appointed him the new leader of Team Blackout, citing his increased stability and assigning the role as atonement.

As leader, Tohya demonstrated renewed responsibility, attempting to single-handedly manage Danji's former duties and repair the damage he caused the team. He adopted a protective strategy against Team Daybreak's banner burnings by preemptively collecting banners from other teams to form alliances, effectively shielding them under Team Blackout's oversight. Despite his leadership, he retained a tendency toward financial impulsiveness, frequently purchasing large quantities of card booster boxes or cartons, a habit persisting even after leaving the team and drawing frequent admonishments.

Tohya eventually stepped down as leader, passing the role to Yu-yu Kondo to pursue personal goals. He continued participating in high-level tournaments, notably the Deluxe events organized by Jinki Mukae. In the first Deluxe tournament, he ranked first in his group. In the second, he placed second in Group C after losing to Megumi Okura but defeating other preliminary fighters, advancing to the quarterfinals where he lost to Gui.

His character design includes blonde hair tied in a ponytail, typically wearing a white T-shirt under a red coat, a red-and-silver ring on his left hand, and a pendant around his neck. Personality-wise, Tohya blends mature responsibility with a childlike enthusiasm, particularly visible in shared interests with Yu-yu regarding food preferences and deck-building styles. This duality persists through his development from hardworking medical student to briefly antagonistic figure and later dedicated, though flawed, team leader.
