Description
Joe Kirifuda, son of Katta Kirifuda and Lulu Takigawa, carries the legacy of the renowned Kirifuda duelist lineage. He is the grandson of Shori and Mai Kirifuda and nephew to Shobu Kirifuda and Lucifer. Born during his parents' seven-year journey in the creature world after the battle against Dormageddon X, he spent his early childhood immersed there before moving to the human world. Introduced to his extended family and parents' allies by age three, he later retained no memory of these early creature world experiences. Growing up largely unrecognized for his heritage, he lived as an ordinary boy, facing bullying from peers like Shacho's gang and showing no exceptional attention from duelists like Boltz or Momo Uraraka, though entities like Deckie acknowledged his lineage and potential.
He possesses a deep spiritual connection to the creature world, characteristic of his family, enabling him to interact with creature spirits and perceive events affecting that realm. Unlike his uncle Shobu's communication or his father Katta's materialization abilities, Joe uniquely creates functional duel monster cards by drawing designs that Deckie materializes. His creations, particularly the Jokers like Jolly the Johnny Joe and Chotto Q, serve as both combat allies and daily aids, such as transportation. This ability stems from his artistic passion; he carries sketching materials, fills his room with creature designs, impressing peers like Kira, and considers his cards friends, echoing his family's bond with creatures.
Physically, Joe is a short 10-year-old with brown hair featuring distinctive yellow front strands styled into "D" and "M" shapes on his forehead, reminiscent of his father's "V" symbol. His attire includes a neckerchief from Kira, blue wristbands, and Deckie hanging from his neck. A red deck belt holds his art tools. His outfits evolve: during the Ten Kings arc, he wears a white-and-blue shirt with tucked sleeves, red pants, and white shoes; the Kings Next arc features a red jacket and blue pants. By sixth grade, he grows taller, and summoning MAX the Johnny triggers a form change.
Personality-wise, Joe is energetic and occasionally cocky during duels, traits shared with his father and uncle. He dislikes curry bread, preferring ramen, and is notably klutzy, often tripping during urgent situations. He intensely values life, inheriting his family's aversion to killing and preferring non-lethal resolutions like banishing adversaries to the creature world. This ethos includes disdain for duelists threatening world balance, informed by awareness of past sacrifices for peace. Inherently forgiving and empathetic, he changes opponents' perspectives, confronting corrupted duelists. Despite initial social isolation from his creature-world upbringing and artistic focus, he forges deep bonds with spirits and human allies like Kira.
His dueling journey begins unremarkably. At age eight, he loses to Kira and constructs an unbalanced five-civilization deck, relying heavily on shield triggers and spells. His strategy prioritizes alternate wins, particularly through Jolly the Johnny Joe's ability to clear opponents' creatures. Early duels show a 4–8 record in the Versus Revolution Final season, including 99 losses to Kira across 100 matches. Training with his father and encounters with Katta's allies, such as Benchan and Leo Hyakujuu, refine his skills. He evolves into a versatile duelist using Jokers and multi-civilization tactics, later adopting Fire-aligned Jokers after gaining his family's primary civilization, the "mark of Fire." By the 2017 season, his record improves to 32–3, reflecting mastery of Joker-centric decks like "Here Comes the Jokers!" and "Nature Jokers!".
Key arcs highlight his growth. In the Ten Kings arc, he dons a new outfit and powered-up deck to confront threats like the Darkness Civilization invasion of Nature Civilization lands. The Kings Next arc involves guarding a secret family treasure scroll tied to 12 legendary cards, thwarting theft attempts by figures like Abaku Onifuda. During the "King of Duelmatch" tournament, Joe faces powerful rivals while uncovering Abaku's motives. His deck transitions to the "Team Kirifuda" race paired with Jokers, culminating in victories against adversaries like Boltz and Abaku with specialized decks such as "Kirifudash Team Trump".
Joe's development spans reconciling his heritage with his identity, evolving from an unacknowledged novice to a guardian of interworld balance. His journey underscores the Kirifuda creed that future generations surpass their predecessors, resolving conflicts through empathy and strategic ingenuity.
