Description
Joe Kirifuda, son of Katta Kirifuda and Lulu Takigawa, descends from the prominent Kirifuda duelist lineage. He is the grandson of Shori Kirifuda and nephew of Shobu Kirifuda, inheriting the family creed that values life above all—rejecting lethal duels in favor of returning opponents to the creature world. Born during his parents' seven-year journey in the creature world after battling Dormageddon X, Joe spent early childhood among spirit beings before moving to the human realm around age three. By eight, these memories faded until reignited by Katsudon, his father's creature partner.
Raised with dueling from a young age, Joe initially struggled with an amateurish deck mixing all five civilizations, suffering 99 consecutive losses to childhood friend Kira. He awakened a unique bond with creature spirits, channeling his artistic talent through Deckie—a sentient deck box—to manifest original cards like Jolly the Johnny Joe, featuring unconventional win conditions. His room brimmed with sketches of creatures inspired by friends.
Energetic yet klutzy, Joe often trips during urgent moments. He treats cards as cherished companions, mirroring his family's spiritual bonds. Unlike curry-bread-loving Katta, he prefers ramen. Though occasionally cocky mid-duel, his core remains forgiving, seeking to transform opponents' hearts rather than crush them. Despite his lineage, peers largely overlooked him until bullies like Shacho targeted him, while entities like Kira's mother monitored his hidden potential.
Joe's skills evolved dramatically across arcs. In Duel Masters Versus Revolution Final, he leaned on spells, shield triggers, and alternate-win tactics before diversifying into Light/Fire/Nature civilizations. Later, he specialized in Jokers civilization—sometimes blended with Fire—and by Duel Masters (2017), he refined a pure Jokers deck to counter threats like Kira's darkened self. His win-loss ratio surged: from 4-8 in Versus Revolution Final to 32-3 in Duel Masters (2017), then 21-3 in Duel Masters!! and 19-4 in Duel Masters King. Key advancements included mastering Fire Civilization Jokers via the "mark of Fire" and wielding Team Kirifuda race cards paired with Jokers.
Story arcs saw Joe guarding the creature world's balance. During Kings Next, he protected his family’s secret treasure scroll tied to twelve 4,000-year-old legendary cards. In Ten Kings and Rise of Kings, his appearance shifted alongside form changes when summoning creatures like MAX the Johnny. As a fifth grader in Duel Masters King!, he entered Abaku Onifuda’s "King of Duelmatch" tournament, confronting rivals like Momo Uraraka and Bolts while unraveling Abaku’s enigmatic motives. His growth culminated in high-stakes victories, including defeating Kira in Duel Masters!! with the "Kirifudash Team Trump" deck.
