Description
Sakura is a white-furred Kishu mix dog with silver-blue eyes in the manga and brown eyes in the anime. Originally a pet, she first met Gin when trapped in a snare, perceiving him as a threat and biting him before Akame freed her; Gin then returned her to her owner. Unable to forget Gin, she later left her owner to join him permanently. Alternate accounts exist: one states she met Gin during his travels with John, Akame, and Tesshin, with Tesshin later escorting the pregnant Sakura to Ōu; another recounts her independently traveling to Ōu a month after Gin saved her from the snare.
She became Gin's mate and traveled with his group until her pregnancy required relocation to Ōu for safety. In Ōu, she befriended Lucy. Jealous, Lucy deceived Sakura by falsely claiming Gin was mortally wounded in the Northern Alps. Trusting her friend, Sakura left Ōu to find Gin. She gave birth to Weed, Joe, and Yukimura in the Northern Alps but weakened due to illness and malnutrition, partly from sacrificing her own nourishment for her puppies.
Saheiji provided a rabbit, but only Weed remained with her as Joe and Yukimura fought over the food and were later adopted by Saheiji. In the manga, Sakura asked the dog GB to care for Weed before dying; GB and Weed buried her in the Northern Alps. In the anime, Smith encountered her after the birth; she expressed concern over Weed's injuries before succumbing to her illness, requesting Smith take Weed to Ōu, a promise he fulfilled. The exact cause of her death remains unspecified, with theories including severe poisoning, parasitic infection from prey, or polluted water consumption.
Her spirit appears during moments of loneliness or crisis for Gin or Weed, notably aiding Weed in his final battle against Hōgen by offering crucial encouragement. After Hōgen's defeat, her spirit appeared to Weed with a reassuring smile. Sakura is characterized as kind, loyal, brave despite limited strength, and devoted to Gin and her puppies, willing to sacrifice her well-being for their safety. Her trusting nature led her to believe Lucy's deception, viewing Lucy as a friend. Official materials describe her as possessing charisma.
She is the mate of Gin, mother of Weed, Joe, and Yukimura, and grandmother of Bellatrix, Orion, Rigel, and Sirius. Her legacy persists through Weed's frequent recollections and her spiritual guidance during pivotal moments.
