Description
Aya Tachibana, a third-year student at Sohoku High School, serves as captain of the school's tennis club during her final year. She possesses short brown hair, sharp eyes, and often wears a sour expression with prominently drawn lips. Her personality is marked by a short temper, grouchiness, and impatience, particularly directed at otaku culture. Aya exhibits a strong protective streak, especially toward her friend Miki Kanzaki, acting almost as a bodyguard. She physically confronts anyone she perceives as threatening Miki or making perverted comments toward her. This protectiveness initially extends to doubting Sakamichi Onoda's cycling abilities, fearing he might deceive Miki.

Her initial interactions with Sakamichi Onoda are hostile; she finds him disgusting due to his otaku interests and suspects him of lying about his cycling feats to exploit Miki's love of bicycles. She physically strikes him when he acts overly friendly toward Miki. However, witnessing his performance at the 41st Inter High race (firsthand in the anime or through Miki's account in the manga) shifts her perception, leading to a grudging respect. Her subsequent attempts to be kinder to Onoda come across as awkward and embarrassed. Notably, Onoda does not remember her name until their second year.

Aya begins with no interest in competitive cycling and lacks knowledge about the sport. Serving on the support team during cycling events, she often asks basic questions about race tactics and mechanics, functioning as an audience surrogate. She voices complaints about the workload involved in support duties but consistently fulfills her responsibilities. Over time, particularly into her second year, she shows growing engagement with cycling, attending the Inter High to support Sohoku even after her tennis team loses its qualifiers. Her protectiveness extends to the broader cycling team; she expresses concern when riders push themselves too hard and reacts angrily to negative spectator comments about Sohoku.

Her relationship with Miki Kanzaki is central. Aya frequently criticizes Miki's obsessive "alien bike talk" and naivete but remains a loyal listener and companion. Miki teases Aya about her awkwardness around Onoda, which irritates Aya. Despite their differences, they maintain a strong friendship, with Miki using the affectionate nickname "Aya-chan".

Aya interacts minimally with other characters. She notes Terufumi Sugimoto's loudness and hypocrisy during the 41st Inter High, pointing out his lack of faith in Sohoku. Her initial coldness toward Shunsuke Imaizumi contrasts between media; she immediately admires him in the anime but regards him distantly in the manga, despite his status as Miki's childhood friend.

Her development shows a gradual mellowing, particularly in her second year. While she retains her grumpy demeanor and occasional temper flares, she becomes more approachable, actively encouraging Onoda before his second Inter High and demonstrating a sustained, albeit reluctant, interest in cycling culture.
