Movie
Description
Aya Tachibana serves as captain of the Sohoku High School tennis club during her third year. She possesses short brown hair, sharp eyes, and typically wears a prominent, somewhat sour expression. Her personality exhibits a quick temper and general impatience, leading to frequent annoyance or irritation. She openly dislikes otaku culture and reacts aggressively, often striking out physically, against individuals she perceives as acting perverted or untoward. This protectiveness focuses intensely on her close friend Miki Kanzaki, whom Aya describes as "helplessly cute" and fiercely defends from unwanted attention; official materials jokingly refer to her as "Miki's bodyguard".

Despite her abrasive exterior, Aya demonstrates loyalty and care in her relationships. She maintains a close friendship with Miki Kanzaki, calling her "Miki". Aya frequently criticizes Miki's intense enthusiasm for bicycles, labeling her a "bike otaku" and expressing frustration when cycling topics distract Miki. Nevertheless, Aya consistently listens to Miki discuss her interests, even when finding the subject confusing or uninteresting. She occasionally turns to Miki for clarification during cycling events, relying on her expertise.

Aya's initial interactions with Sakamichi Onoda are overwhelmingly negative; she finds his otaku demeanor disgusting and suspects him of fabricating stories about cycling to Akihabara to manipulate Miki. She physically strikes him early on when perceiving inappropriate behavior toward Miki. However, her perspective shifts after witnessing Sakamichi's growth as a cyclist and learning of his achievements, including his victory at the 41st Summer Inter High. By the 42nd Summer Inter High, she actively supports him, surprising him by telling him to "do his best" and even considering hitting him pre-race to clear his nervousness—an awkward gesture reflecting her genuine encouragement. Despite this development, Sakamichi initially struggles to remember her name until their second year.

Her involvement with the Sohoku cycling team deepens over time. After her tennis team loses in the Inter High qualifiers during her second year, she accompanies Miki to support the cycling team at the Inter High competition. Though frequently voicing complaints about the workload and remaining largely unfamiliar with cycling terminology—often asking basic questions to understand race dynamics—she diligently performs support duties. This participation fosters a gradual, reluctant interest in the sport, contrasting her earlier indifference.

Aya occasionally notes other characters, such as criticizing Terufumi Sugimoto's perceived hypocrisy during the Inter High when he expresses doubt in his team only to regain confidence as their situation improves. The anime adaptation depicts her as a fan of Shunsuke Imaizumi, attending his race against Sakamichi with other spectators.

Her development shows subtle maturation; while retaining her grumpy demeanor, she becomes more approachable in her second year and makes visible efforts to be kinder to Sakamichi, albeit awkwardly. This shift underscores her capacity for respect and adaptability, moving from outright hostility to reluctant support.
