Description
Azazel is a central demonic figure in the supernatural comedy series, serving as one of the primary summoned entities. His background is rooted in his nature as a demon from Hell, specifically of the Aamon race, also known as an Azazel. He embodies the deadly sin of Lust, and his designated demonic function is lewdness or淫奔. Initially, he enters into a three-hundred-year contract with the detective Akutabe. However, this contract is later transferred to Akutabe's assistant, Rinko Sakuma, much to her dismay. In his true demonic form, he is described as a powerful, intimidating figure with back-mounted wings, horns on his head, red hair, and pointed ears. However, when summoned into the human world, specifically within the confines of Akutabe's office which is protected by an anti-demon barrier, his appearance is drastically altered into a much smaller, chibi-like, and more comical form that still retains his wings and horns.

Azazel's personality is defined by his extreme and unapologetic perversion. He derives endless enjoyment from sexually harassing others, with his favorite target being his new contract holder, Sakuma. He is also a notorious coward and an opportunist, possessing a strong sense of self-preservation and a talent for trying to shift blame onto others. Despite being highly vulgar and often cruel, he is also portrayed as a bumbling idiot whose schemes almost always backfire due to his terrible judgment and low cunning. He is described as being professionally envious and often ends up in tragic, humiliating situations as a direct result of his own actions. His primary motivation appears to be the pursuit of his base desires, primarily sexual gratification, along with a desire to avoid punishment and hardship. He has little to no ambition for power or respect, instead focusing on immediate, selfish pleasures. This makes him lazy and largely useless for complex tasks, often being used by Akutabe as a disposable pawn or for the most unsavory jobs.

In the story's structure, Azazel serves as the primary comic relief and the most frequent victim of abuse. His role is not to be a formidable threat, but to be a catalyst for chaotic and absurd situations that arise from his incompetence and perversity. He is often summoned to help solve cases for Akutabe's detective agency, but his contributions are almost invariably negligible or counterproductive, requiring other demons or Akutabe's own overwhelming power to resolve the matter. His key relationships define his existence. His relationship with Akutabe is one of pure terror; Azazel is deathly afraid of the detective, who treats him with extreme cruelty, often physically abusing, maiming, or even killing him for his failures, knowing that as a demon he will survive. This has led to Azazel being the most severely abused demon in the series. In contrast, his relationship with Sakuma is more complex; while he constantly sexually harasses her, he is also contractually bound to her, and she often retaliates with her own forms of punishment. His relationship with his demonic peers is equally fraught. He and Beelzebub, a fly demon who appears as a penguin, have a long history as former classmates. Azazel used to bully Beelzebub, but the tables have turned, and Beelzebub now holds a higher status and power, often looking down on Azazel.

While Azazel does not experience profound moral development, there are significant changes to his status. The most notable event is the transfer of his contract from Akutabe to Sakuma, which shifts the dynamic of his servitude but does little to change his behavior. A significant development occurs later in the manga, where Azazel becomes the first demon to awaken, reaching a new level of power and potential, though this is a later event in the source material. Despite this, within the main runtime of the anime, he remains a static yet perpetually entertaining source of failure.

Azazel possesses a notable supernatural ability simply called Lewdness. This power allows him to incite and manipulate the lust of others. His specific applications of this power include making people appear incredibly attractive or, conversely, making them look hideous and unattractive. He can also induce impotence in his targets. While potentially powerful, his ability is often used in petty and short-sighted ways that rarely achieve the desired outcome, further cementing his status as an ineffective demon.
