Description
Azazel originates from Hebrew lore as a leader of the Grigori, angels who descended to earth, married human women, and imparted forbidden knowledge such as weapon-making and cosmetics, ultimately incurring divine punishment. In Devil Children media, he emerges as a primary antagonist. Azazel usurped the throne of the demon world by trapping its rightful ruler, Lucifer, and impersonated him. This deception secured his rule over Central Makai, enabling him to dispatch demons to invade the human world.
His ambition reached beyond the demon world, seeking dominion over both humanity and the angelic realms by exploiting the Oracle chamber's apocalyptic programs, Armageddon and Ragnarok. To safeguard his false authority, Azazel orchestrated the kidnapping of Nagahisa Kai, Setsuna's half-brother, manipulating events to trigger global destruction. He also exploited his daughter Elegy; however, witnessing his cruelty led her to reject his methods and align with the angels.
Physically, Azazel possesses a distinct demonic form featuring horns and pale skin, though specific visual details vary across adaptations. His personality blends strategic manipulation with overt aggression, frequently employing deception to achieve his ends. The manga adaptation intensifies his actions: he massacres the Cerberus Clan, fractures the demon world through warfare, and betrays allies like his spy in Fire Land, resulting in its ruin. He further demonstrates ruthlessness by mocking Elegy's fallen servants and endangering his own capital during conflicts.
His reign concludes when Setsuna and Mirai gather the Messiah Horns and Eyes, confronting him within the Dark Palace. Following his defeat, Azazel faces imprisonment in the Deep Hole, a punitive dimension for condemned demons. In this state, he remains recruitable by the protagonists under specific circumstances, though his motivations stay ambiguous. The manga presents an alternate resolution where Lucifer exposes Azazel's true intent to wield the Rainbow Key for universal domination just before his downfall.
