Description
Rimuru Tempest began as Satoru Mikami, a 37-year-old Japanese salaryman who perished after being stabbed while protecting a colleague. Reincarnated in a fantasy world as a slime, Rimuru acquired unique skills such as Predator and Great Sage, enabling the absorption of abilities and environmental analysis. A meeting with the sealed Storm Dragon Veldora sparked a friendship; they exchanged names, transforming Satoru into Rimuru Tempest. Rimuru consumed Veldora to study his seal, ultimately freeing the dragon while gaining his power.
Rimuru's slime form started as a slightly blue, translucent sphere roughly 40 cm in diameter, expanding to 80-100 cm upon evolving into an Ultimate Slime. This form could adopt metallic or golden appearances under specific conditions. Rimuru's human form, achieved by consuming the deceased adventurer Shizue Izawa, matured through stages: initially manifesting as a 120 cm tall child, then progressively aging into a 155 cm tall androgynous adolescent resembling a 15-16 year old after becoming an Ultimate Slime. Key features include silver-blue hair, golden eyes (which turn red during the activation of skills Great Sage, Raphael, or Ciel), and typical attire of dark clothing often paired with a scarf, haori, or coat.
The character is genderless and sexless, confirmed by author Fuse. Rimuru initially self-identified with male pronouns due to Satoru's memories, but shifted towards gender neutrality over time. Rimuru accepts being dressed in feminine clothing by subordinates without objection, reflecting a lack of gender association. Official Japanese media avoids gendered pronouns, though some translations use male terms.
Rimuru's personality merges Satoru's salaryman work ethic with a slime's adaptable nature. Generally laid-back, kind, and diplomatic, Rimuru seeks peaceful solutions and alliances. A strong sense of responsibility fuels diligent nation-building for the Jura Tempest Federation, aiming to create a comfortable world for all species. However, threats to subordinates trigger ruthless retaliation, including intimidation, torture, or annihilation of enemies. Rimuru also employs manipulation, memory alteration, and historical revisionism to maintain a benevolent public image. Notable traits include optimism, generosity in naming and empowering allies, forgiveness toward redeemable foes, and anxiety about outliving companions.
In "The Slime Diaries," Rimuru's daily life within Tempest highlights community interactions, humorous incidents, and casual leadership. This includes overseeing festivals, resolving minor disputes, and participating in leisure activities, contrasting the main series' high-stakes narrative while underscoring the character's approachability and care for citizens' wellbeing.
Key relationships feature Veldora as a close confidant; subordinates like Benimaru (ogre), Shion (ogre), and Rigurd (goblin) viewing Rimuru as a respected leader; and alliances with figures such as King Gazel of Dwargon. Rimuru names and mentors many characters, including former enemies like the orc Geld, fostering loyalty.
Rimuru's abilities expanded significantly: Predator evolved to devour skills, magic, or entire beings; Great Sage advanced into Ultimate Skills like Raphael and Ciel, enabling complex analysis and reality manipulation. Evolution stages included Demon Slime after becoming a True Demon Lord and Ultimate Slime following reincarnation as a True Dragon hybrid, granting powers like multidimensional barriers and energy manipulation.
Establishing the Jura Tempest Federation as a sanctuary for monsters, Rimuru implemented Earth-inspired innovations such as baths, ramen, and manga. Leadership involved political negotiations with human nations, economic development, and conflict resolution, driven by the ideal of interspecies coexistence. The nation-building theme extends to the game "ISEKAI Memories," where Rimuru constructs settlements and interacts with citizens.
