Description
Myne is the protagonist of Ascendance of a Bookworm, originally a young Japanese woman named Urano Motosu who died in an earthquake while surrounded by her beloved books. She is reincarnated as a frail five‑year‑old girl in a medieval fantasy world where books are scarce and only accessible to the nobility. Her foremost motivation is to read again, and she dedicates herself to creating books from scratch using the knowledge she retained from her past life.
In personality, Myne is defined by an overwhelming obsession with books, which can make her reckless and irrational when her access to reading material is threatened. She is straightforward, determined, and resourceful, constantly devising ways to overcome obstacles despite her physical weakness. She has a talent for teaching and inspiring others, and she possesses an excellent memory that allows her to recall information about technology, printing, and nutrition. Her body is extremely frail; she tires easily and suffers from frequent fevers, partly due to an illness known as the Devouring—a condition in which commoners born with mana become physically debilitated by the excess magical energy. Myne’s mana reserves are extraordinarily vast, and only her strong will keeps her alive. As the story progresses, she learns to control this mana through training under the noble priest Ferdinand.
Myne’s role in the story is that of a catalyst for change. Starting as a commoner, she uses her knowledge to invent paper, shampoo, hairpins, and eventually a printing press, overturning the economic and social structures of her duchy, Ehrenfest. Her journey forces her to navigate the rigid class system, and she eventually becomes a blue‑robed shrine maiden and later a high‑ranking noble under the name Rozemyne after being adopted by the archduke Sylvester. She transitions from a selfish bibliophile concerned only with her own reading into a responsible leader who cares for the orphans and the prosperity of her duchy.
Key relationships shape her development. Lutz, her childhood friend and first business partner, provides practical support and remains loyal even after she becomes a noble. Benno, a shrewd merchant, becomes her primary business patron and mentor in commerce. Ferdinand, a cold and brilliant noble priest, acts as her strict teacher and protector, helping her control her mana and navigate noble politics; he later becomes her fiancé. Her commoner family—her father Gunther, mother Effa, and older sister Tuuli—remain her emotional anchor, though social distance grows as she ascends in status.
Throughout the series, Myne’s notable abilities include her encyclopedic memory of her past life’s knowledge, her talent for teaching, and her ability to invent and adapt technology. She also develops significant magical power as she learns to wield her mana. Her character arc is one of growth from obsessive self‑interest to genuine care for others, all while relentlessly pursuing her dream of creating a world where everyone can enjoy books.
