TV-Series
Description
Menou is the proprietress of the bar annexed to the Tasokare Hotel, a realm existing between life and death for undecided souls. At first glance, she resembles a human but possesses distinctive non-human traits, including curved black horns protruding through her green hat and an overall lack of emotional expressiveness. She has a tall, curvy figure with short black hair, dark brown eyes, and a beauty mark beneath her left lip. Her attire consists of a long green dress with gold adornments, black lace gloves, black heels, and accessories including a pearl necklace, golden bracelet, and hoop earrings.

She maintains amused indifference toward human affairs, displaying consistent emotional distance as a non-human entity. While other characters describe her as terrifying when angered, this remains unobserved in the main narrative. Menou performs her duties as a bar hostess professionally, offering advice and practical assistance to guests when solicited, such as providing Neko Tsukahara with a handheld mirror. However, she fundamentally lacks compassion for humans and questions the Manager’s emotional attachments to them.

Her background is largely undefined, with unspecified origin and reasons for joining the hotel staff. By the main story, she ranks among the hotel's longest-serving employees, second only to the Manager. Throughout Neko’s stay, Menou assists with tasks and requests as part of her role, though her involvement remains detached and transactional. After Chapter 7, subtle hints suggest she finds entertainment in observing the current human guests despite her professed disinterest.

A significant shift occurs in the Special Stories. Learning from Kiriko that Neko pushed Masaki Osoto into Hell in the real world, Menou experiences unprecedented excitement and recognizes Neko as the first human to captivate her interest. When informed of Atori Haruto’s fate, she struggles uncharacteristically to light her cigarette—a physical manifestation of internal turmoil. This catalyzes her realization that Neko’s actions have indirectly humanized her, fostering newfound capacity for emotional engagement. Kiriko later observes Menou’s eyes have softened slightly, indicating a subtle mellowing of her demeanor.

Her relationship with the Manager is professional but distant; they interact infrequently, primarily when he visits the bar for alcohol. During Neko’s unauthorized exploration of the Manager’s room, the discovery of smoking pipes identical to Menou’s briefly implies a potential intimate connection, though unexplored. Her dynamic with Neko evolves from passive observation to active fascination, culminating in introspection about her own emotional growth after Neko’s departure. Menou initially attributes her disappointment to losing a source of entertainment but later acknowledges genuine intrigue in Neko’s persona, accepting their interactions have altered her fundamentally.

The kanji in her name (瑪瑙) translates to "agate" or "onyx," minerals traditionally used in decorative objects or jewelry, aligning with her refined aesthetic.
