Description
Kyo Soma bears the Cat's curse within the Sohma family, a spirit excluded from the Chinese Zodiac by the Rat's trickery. This curse triggers his transformation into an orange cat if embraced by the opposite sex or under extreme stress. Removal of his Juzu bead bracelet reveals his true form: a grotesque, foul-smelling monster embodying the Cat's vengeful spirit.
Rejected from birth by the Sohma clan who used him as a scapegoat, Kyo endured a traumatic childhood. His father blamed him for his mother's suicide, subjecting him to verbal and emotional abuse before abandonment. His loving but fearful mother obsessively checked his bracelet before her death, deepening Kyo's guilt and self-loathing. Martial arts master Kazuma Sohma then adopted him, providing stability, training, and paternal love, though Kyo initially distanced himself.
Isolated, Kyo's only childhood friend, Kagura, acted out of pity; their friendship shattered when she forcibly removed his bracelet and reacted with horror to his true form. He harbored lifelong enmity towards Yuki Sohma, the Rat, blaming him for the Cat's exclusion. This rivalry fueled a deal with family head Akito Sohma: defeating Yuki before graduation would spare Kyo lifelong confinement in the Cat's Room.
Moving into Shigure Sohma's house, Kyo met Tohru Honda, daughter of his late acquaintance Kyoko Honda. He had known Kyoko briefly as a child and promised to protect Tohru, a vow he later regretted. He failed to save Kyoko from a car accident, choosing to hide his curse rather than transform publicly, compounding his guilt. Initially cold to Tohru to push her away, her unconditional acceptance of his cat form softened him. Witnessing his true form and her choice to stay deepened their bond profoundly.
Kyo developed romantic feelings for Tohru but felt undeserving, burdened by guilt over Kyoko's death and his impending confinement. He rejected her confession to protect her, but reconsidered upon realizing his rejection caused her pain. He reciprocated her love as the zodiac curse broke, freeing him from transformation and confinement.
After the curse ended, Kyo reconciled with Yuki, acknowledging their mutual envy and forming a tentative friendship. Overcoming self-hatred, he grew calmer and more emotionally open. He pursued a future with Tohru; they married, had three children (Hajime, another son, and a daughter), and later a granddaughter. He trained to inherit Kazuma's dojo, becoming a martial arts instructor.
Physically, Kyo possesses bright orange hair and eyes. He prefers loose clothing, particularly avoiding neck constriction, reflecting cat-like traits. His personality evolved from volatile and defensive to gentle and supportive, retaining his passionate, protective nature. Cat-like behaviors included aversion to water, leeks, loud noises, a preference for high places, and a fondness for milk.
