Description
Saki Hanajima stands as one of Tohru Honda's closest friends. Her psychic abilities include sensing the emotional "waves" of others and projecting harmful electric waves. These powers emerged during childhood following severe bullying, notably an incident where classmates forced live newts into her mouth. This trauma triggered her abilities and caused a boy to collapse, leading to her social ostracization. Peers blamed her for misfortunes, labeling her a witch. In reaction, Saki adopted an all-black wardrobe and black nail polish as symbols of guilt, though she later developed a genuine fondness for the style.

Her family—parents, grandmother, and younger brother Megumi—provided unwavering support despite societal rejection. Megumi, who also developed psychic abilities to share her burden, prayed for someone to accept her. This prayer was answered when Tohru Honda and Arisa Uotani befriended Saki in high school. Tohru's nonjudgmental acceptance helped Saki gain control over her powers, though an initial relapse occurred when rumors resurfaced, causing Saki to temporarily distance herself. Tohru and Arisa's insistence on maintaining their friendship ultimately helped Saki overcome this fear.

Saki exhibits a reserved, deadpan demeanor and speaks bluntly to those outside her inner circle. She rarely displays overt emotions, reserving her smiles for close friends and family. Despite her stoic exterior, she demonstrates perceptiveness, using her wave-sensing ability to detect others' hidden emotions and intentions. She employs this ability to protect Tohru from harassment, particularly from the Prince Yuki Fan Club.

Contrasting her maturity, Saki displays laziness regarding academics and physical activity. She deliberately fails tests to take easier makeup exams and avoids physical education through exaggerated complaints. Her primary interests include reading shōjo manga, playing card games, eating, and styling her friends' hair. Within her friendship with Tohru and Arisa, Saki assumes a protective, maternal role. Alongside Arisa, she vowed at Kyoko Honda's grave to safeguard Tohru, a promise noted by others as resembling parental guardianship. She expresses particular protectiveness toward Tohru, whom she considers her greatest weakness.

Saki maintains a respectful relationship with the Sohma family, notably expressing admiration for Kazuma Sohma's appearance, much to Kyo's discomfort. She also interacts casually with Akito Sohma, using the nickname "Ah-chan" after learning Akito is female.

In the sequel *Fruits Basket Another*, Saki marries a foreign man and has a son named Rio Mosca, confirming her continued presence in the story's future generations.

In the film *Fruits Basket: Prelude*, Saki appears in a minor, non-speaking role during the recap segments of the 2019 anime adaptation, contributing no new character development.
