TV-Series
Description
Maya serves as the Mental Model of a Fleet of Fog heavy cruiser, originally belonging to the First Oriental Fleet. Her vessel is a Fog reincarnation of the World War II Takao-class cruiser Maya, alongside sister ships Takao, Atago, and Choukai. In the manga, the vessel sports orange and dark-gray hull markings with flame effects, while the anime shifts this palette to pink.
Her Mental Model manifests as a late-teen girl. The manga depicts long black hair and blue eyes, while the anime features dark-brown hair and dark-brown eyes. Her attire consistently includes red elements and a prominent yellow smiley-face badge on her skirt or dress. Maya exhibits extreme liveliness, social dependence, and impatience, expressing distress when ignored or forced to wait. She persistently annoys others, including superiors like Kongou. A defining affinity for music drives her to create or play instruments like pianos or violins, though often inaccurately constructed. She sings constantly, even during inappropriate moments like surveillance reports, and declares "It's a carnival!" during combat, viewing battle as celebration.
Her vessel carries extensive armaments: 20 torpedo tubes, 74 photon cannons, 56 missile launchers, depth charges, and a Super-Graviton Cannon, defended by Wave-Force Armor. Technical specifications include 13,410 tons displacement, 203.76 meters length, 20.72 meters beam, 9.44 meters draft, and 90 knots maximum speed.
In the manga storyline, Maya receives orders to rendezvous with Haruna and Kirishima post-Yokosuka. After their sinking, she awaits Haruna with Kirishima’s core, occupying herself by singing the same song over 180,000 times and broadcasting it to Kongou. When the Osakabe mansion is attacked, she grants Haruna access to her weapon systems, formally acknowledging Haruna as her detachment flagship. This decision proves critical when a berserk Haruna nearly deploys Maya’s armaments against civilian cities, halted only by the Admiralty Code’s holder. Later, after Haruna, Kirishima, and Makie Osakabe board her vessel, Maya travels with them to Sapporo. During battleships’ discussions with Makoto Osakabe, she entertains Makie by playing violin, yielding the instrument upon discovering Makie’s superior skill.
The anime continuity diverges significantly: Maya’s Mental Model is revealed as an artificial observation unit created and maintained by submarines I-400 and I-402 to monitor Kongou. This false Mental Model is eventually absorbed by Kongou, removing Maya from active participation.
Key relationships include enthusiastic loyalty to Haruna, whom she calls "Flagship of My Heart." Kirishima receives minimal interaction despite technically commanding under Haruna. Kongou, as First Oriental Fleet flagship, endures Maya’s constant singing over quantum communications with visible irritation. Regarding sister ship Takao, Maya expresses curiosity about the man who "stole her sister’s heart" after learning Makie resides with Saori Chihaya, Gunzou Chihaya’s mother.
Trivia notes highlight her ability to make incorrectly constructed instruments function according to her will and fan adoption of her "Flagship of My Heart" endearment. An anime episode-end illustration depicts her alongside the Maya character from Kantai Collection.
