On September 5, 2016, Maya discovered Mia's murdered body and faced false accusation. Phoenix Wright, Mia's protégé, defended her. During the trial, Maya channeled Mia's spirit to prove her innocence, securing her appointment as Phoenix's assistant at Wright & Co. Law Offices. She aided investigations and co-counseled in trials, though her channeling abilities remained unstable, requiring training. Maya played a key role in Phoenix's early cases, including investigating the DL-6 Incident. She obtained crucial evidence implicating prosecutor Manfred von Karma by retrieving a bullet, resulting in both her and Phoenix being incapacitated. Feeling her channeling unreliable, Maya returned to Kurain Village for training but reunited with Phoenix six months later. During a ritual for Dr. Turner Grey, Maya was framed for his murder by her aunt Morgan and Mimi Miney. Unconscious during the ritual, she was hidden. Jailed, she entrusted Phoenix with her magatama, which later gained the power to reveal "Psyche-Locks" – visual manifestations of secrets. Pearl Fey channeled Mia during the trial, enabling Maya's spiritual reunion with her sister. In March 2018, assassin Shelly de Killer kidnapped Maya from the Gatewater Hotel. De Killer demanded Phoenix secure Matt Engarde's acquittal in exchange for her life. Held in a wine cellar, Maya channeled Mia to signal her safety to Phoenix and attempted escapes. She later left a note urging Phoenix to deliver the appropriate verdict for Engarde. Mia, channeled by Pearl during the trial, provided clues to Maya's location, leading to her rescue after Engarde confessed to avoid de Killer's vengeance. Maya continued assisting Phoenix in later cases, including one involving the Kurain Sacred Urn said to hold Ami Fey's soul. She eventually returned to Kurain Village for further training, ascending to Master of the Kurain Channeling Technique and head of the Fey clan. Her spirit channeling mastery improved significantly over time, though she retained her core personality while demonstrating increased maturity later. Her character design features traditional Japanese spirit medium attire: a kimono with a shortened hem and a magatama bead. Channeling Mia shifts her physical appearance to Mia's likeness while retaining her clothing. She temporarily wore a waitress uniform during one case, keeping only the beads in her hair.
