Description
Chai serves as a low-ranking member of the Chi You Men criminal organization under Lan Di. Standing approximately 160 cm (5'3") tall and significantly underweight at 55 kg (121 lbs), his physical appearance is distinctive: a bald head devoid of eyebrows, light brown bloodshot eyes, and numerous missing or decaying teeth. Visible veins and warts mark his head. A spinal condition causes a pronounced hunched posture, preventing him from standing fully upright and resulting in a near-crawling gait. He consistently dresses in a purple jacket with ripped sleeves, no shirt underneath, frayed denim shorts held by a yarn belt, and bandages on his limbs, always barefoot.

Erratic and vain, Chai frequently refers to himself as the "Great Chai." He exhibits manic expressions and speaks in a garbled manner, implying mental instability. His primary motivation is gaining favor with Lan Di to achieve wealth and status within the Chi You Men, potentially stemming from a background of poverty or neglect suggested by his malnourishment and dental neglect. He employs a unique martial arts style loosely adapted from Tanglangquan (Praying Mantis Fist) to suit his unusual physique.

Chai first appears stalking Ryo Hazuki in Yokosuka after learning of the Phoenix Mirror. He ambushes Ryo at the You Arcade, steals Ryo's Hong Kong ticket, eats it, and engages Ryo in a fight. Later, he steals the Phoenix Mirror during Ryo's meeting with Master Chen and Guizhang Chen at the harbor but fails to escape due to their intervention. Partnering with Terry Ryan of the Mad Angels, Chai orchestrates the kidnapping of Nozomi Harasaki to lure Ryo. When this plan fails, he attempts to kill Ryo by dropping a steel beam on him at the harbor; Guizhang pushes Ryo to safety, suffering a leg injury. Chai confronts Ryo in a final battle, is defeated, and kicked into the sea.

In the unlockable "Shenmue Side Story," Chai follows Ryo onto a boat to Hong Kong. He kidnaps passenger Xiaomei Ding to bait Ryo into a fight on the deck. After a battle where Chai uses bladed claw gauntlets, he is thrown overboard into the ocean.

During Shenmue III, Chai tracks Ryo to Bailu Village. He observes Ryo's defeat by Yanlang from a rooftop and later steals a treasure map scroll from Shenhua Ling. Taunted by Shenhua into proving his strength, he fights Ryo but is subdued. Under pressure, he reveals the Chi You Men transported stonemasons to Niaowu by boat before escaping. Chai reappears holding the stonemasons hostage in a Niaowu warehouse but is defeated again by Ryo.

Trivia notes include unused game files for Chai in Shenmue II, implying potential cut appearances. His room in Shenmue III contains a spare outfit, fruit, documents in Chinese, a map, a poster of himself, a family photo with a woman and child resembling him, and a punching dummy with Ryo's picture.
