Description
Giichi, a former shipwright, lived modestly with his wife and son Tōjirō. Following his wife's death, he struggled to afford treatment for his chronically ill son. Desperate, he turned to crime, earning a death sentence. Habaki Kagimura recruited him into the covert execution squad Mugai-ryu, offering part of Giichi's earnings for his son's care. This agreement tethered his service to his son's survival.

Within the Mugai-ryu, Giichi served as deputy leader alongside Hyakurin, becoming its deadliest member with roughly 60 Ittō-ryū kills by the series' end. His combat style prioritized speed, improvisation, and relentless determination, fighting through severe injuries. His primary weapon was Kanetsura's Mito-no-Kami ("Guardian of the Three Paths"), a circular blade on a chain used to sever limbs or disarm foes at range. After Manji destroyed it, Giichi used a pair of chained sickles Manji loaned him.

Giichi maintained a quiet, stoic demeanor, favoring solitary missions and minimal interaction with teammates. Though outwardly cynical, calling his work "underhanded murder," he harbored a deep need for purpose. His closest bond was with Hyakurin; he rescued her after her capture and torture by Ittō-ryū members, executed her tormentors, and nursed her recovery. Upon earning his freedom from the shogunate, he attempted to buy Hyakurin's release with his entire payout. Habaki initially refused but later agreed on the condition Giichi capture Manji. Giichi's freedom tragically coincided with his son's death, leaving him adrift. He descended into alcoholism in a remote beggar settlement, where Hyakurin found him. In a vulnerable moment, he confessed his inability to live without obligation, deeming his life worthless.

After Hyakurin revealed her pregnancy—resulting from rape during captivity—Giichi prevented her from terminating it, promising to raise the child. This commitment marked a turning point; Hyakurin expressed affection for him, which he did not overtly reciprocate. They became inseparable despite personality clashes, with the series implying they eventually raised the child together. Giichi also demonstrated reluctant support for Rin Asano, providing her critical intelligence on Anotsu Kagehisa's whereabouts without interfering in her quest.

Following the Mugai-ryu's dissolution, Giichi temporarily aided Habaki against the Ittō-ryū in a final confrontation. He fought Abayama Sōsuke in a brutal battle that cost him his ear but ended in Abayama's defeat, underscoring his enduring sense of duty as he transitioned toward civilian life with Hyakurin.
