Description
Charlie, a traveling magician, transports protagonist Mei Ayazuki from the modern era to the Meiji period using magic during a crimson full moon. His true identity is the shrouded Tenichi Shokyokusai, hinting at a significant secret underlying his existence. He appears exclusively at night, maintaining a perpetually enigmatic smile. His personality exhibits masochistic traits, deriving excitement when Mei faces harsh words or cold treatment. He demonstrates considerable magical abilities, notably summoning animals from his hat, though he cannot conjure food. Functionally, he serves as Mei's navigational guide in the Meiji era, appearing at pivotal moments to offer direction or information.

In "Hanakagami no Fantasia," Charlie informs Mei at a shrine she can return home during the next full moon, directly influencing her emotional conflict. This moment unveils his deeper involvement in her past: he previously guided a younger Mei to the flower mirror, facilitating her childhood encounter with Kyoka Izumi, establishing his role in orchestrating her connections across time. Following the mirror's crisis resolution, he resumes his magician persona, performing a magic show as Mei reconciles with her choice to remain.

Throughout, Charlie's motivations and origins remain deliberately ambiguous, consistent with his mysterious nature. His actions consistently drive Mei toward pivotal encounters and self-realization, particularly regarding her "tamayori" ability to perceive spirits.
