Takeru is a warm yet shy-around-girls, cheerful 15-year-old living in Eden, a domed lunar colony established after Earth's climate catastrophe rendered it uninhabitable. As a third-generation moon dweller standing 170 cm tall, he harbors a fascination with Earth despite Eden's official narrative declaring it a lifeless ruin.
Technically adept, Takeru built his own lunar hover-craft "Vehicle" for racing. After it malfunctions and catches fire during an unauthorized race, he is assigned community service outside the dome. There, he discovers a crashed capsule containing photographs and a message from Earth's Kennedy Space Center. One photo features a young Indigenous American woman named Ao, sparking Takeru's determination to uncover the truth about Earth.
His investigation uncovers heavy censorship within Eden's systems regarding Earth's condition. He encounters a group living outside the colony's control and gains access to a long-range lunar rover. Defying travel restrictions, Takeru journeys beyond the permitted zone and witnesses Earth firsthand – a vibrant blue planet contradicting Eden's propaganda, prompting authorities to pursue him.
Takeru's actions escalate from rebellion to direct confrontation with Eden's authoritarian government. He commandeers an old escape rocket with his friend Bismarck ("Biz") and flees to Earth. Their capsule lands in the ruins of Las Vegas. Takeru uses his Vehicle to traverse the United States, seeking Ao. His journey spans roughly four years, involving significant time jumps for practical challenges like spacecraft construction.
Takeru evolves from a spirited racer into a proactive figure challenging systemic deception. His close friendships include Kazuma and Bismarck, though Kazuma's motivations later become conflicted. While initially motivated by infatuation with Ao, Takeru's quest transforms into a broader effort to expose Eden's lies and embrace Earth's restored environment. The narrative concludes with his actions helping to reveal Eden's falsehoods and the potential for renewed human life on Earth.
