Description
Emilico serves as the primary viewpoint character and Living Doll for her Shadow master, Kate. Her appearance features long blonde hair tied in pigtails with dark blue bows, deep purple-blue eyes, and pale skin. She wears a standard maid uniform: a dark Victorian-style dress, white apron, white drawers, and a sleeveless undershirt. Before entering the Shadows House, she wore a brown dress with a white apron, long white socks, and brown shoes. Her circus attire included a frilled white shirt, brown shorts with suspenders, striped tights, and a tiny top hat on one bun.

Emilico originated as a nameless orphan raised by a traveling circus. She performed odd jobs and tightrope walking, earning the nicknames "Tightrope" and "Odd Jobs." During a Mirrorside Village performance, she encountered Kate, a girl covered in darkness. Fired from the circus after a mishap, she met John, Patrick, Louise, and Shirley, who invited her to the Shadows House selection. She borrowed Kate's name for the list, spent the night at Shirley's house, and experienced brainwashing via coffee upon arrival. This circus background explains her acrobatic skills, ventriloquism ability, and initial illiteracy, setting her apart from other Living Dolls.

Personality-wise, Emilico exhibits a cheerful, optimistic, and hardworking demeanor. She prioritizes caring for Kate and enjoys making friends. Her curiosity drives her to learn skills like reading, and she maintains a positive attitude even in adversity, often standing up for others, earning her the nickname "Flower Garden" (or "Sunshine" in anime subtitles) from rivals. She occasionally masks inner sadness, particularly after regaining memories of her past, leading to self-doubt about her place in the Shadows House.

As Kate's Living Doll, Emilico's duties involve cleaning the soot Kate emits and acting as Kate's "face" during public interactions. Initially inexperienced and clumsy, she struggled with tasks like reading and accidentally damaged Kate's belongings. Despite setbacks, she gradually becomes more dependable, repairing Kate's doll and creating her own plush bird named Rolly from a torn capelet. Her role expands when she joins Cleaning Squad 10, eventually becoming its leader. She forms close bonds with teammates Lou, Mia, and Rosemary, and later develops friendships with Shaun and Rum during night patrols.

Key relationships include her deep loyalty to Kate, whom she supports emotionally and practically. Emilico's kindness influences others; Patrick develops feelings for her after she gives him a yellow daffodil during the Debut. She also defends Rum from bullies and helps the grieving Belle twin after her sibling's death.

Throughout various arcs, Emilico experiences significant development. During the Debut, she faces criticism for failing to mimic Kate's expressions but recovers with support from Shaun and Rum. Uncovering the Shadows House's secrets triggers regained memories of her circus life and earlier existence as a street urchin (mudlark). This leads to a crisis of identity where she questions her worth and fears burdening her friends, confiding these insecurities primarily in Shaun. Her circus-honed skills—acrobatics, juggling, and ventriloquism—prove crucial in solving problems and aiding Kate's rebellion.

Trivia notes include her love for bread, sparked by Kate sharing high-quality bread with her, and her favorite color being red. Kate named her after her grandmother Emily, adding a unique twist to typical Living Doll naming conventions.
