Description
Louise is a Shadow who lives in the Shadows House and is attended by her Living Doll, Lou. As a Shadow, she appears as a completely black silhouette that mimics Lou’s form and relies on her to serve as her face and voice. Louise is characterized by a sassy, confident, and openly narcissistic personality. She is deeply fixated on her own beauty, which she perceives through Lou’s appearance, and takes great pride in showing off Lou’s face to others. Her room is decorated with multiple drawings of Lou, reflecting her obsession with this image. Unlike many Shadows who treat their Living Dolls as separate tools, Louise initially regards Lou as a literal extension of herself, valuing her only as a vessel for her own vanity.
Her motivations are rooted in self-admiration and a comfortable acceptance of the Shadows House’s rules. She believes what she has been told about the hierarchy and sees no reason to question the system. This makes her one of the debutante-class Shadows who is most at ease with the status quo. Despite her selfishness, she is not malicious; her behavior is typical for a Shadow who has been raised to see Living Dolls as mere accessories. Over time, however, Louise begins to show signs of genuine concern for Lou’s well-being. She starts checking on Lou to ensure she does not become overly tired, a small but significant step toward recognizing Lou as a person with physical needs. This development continues as she gradually moves away from pure self-obsession and joins Kate’s resistance, realizing that the process of unification—where a Shadow fully absorbs its Living Doll—would destroy the beauty she values in Lou.
In the story, Louise is a side protagonist who participates in the Debut alongside Kate, John, Patrick, and Shirley. Her role primarily highlights the typical mindset of a Shadow who has internalized the house’s brainwashing, but she later becomes an ally in the rebellion. Her key relationship is with Lou, her Living Doll. Lou is quiet, obedient, and rarely expresses her own desires, which initially suits Louise’s need for a perfect, compliant face. The dynamic is one-sided at first, with Louise dominating and using her soot ability to control Lou when convenient. However, as Louise begins to appreciate Lou’s humanity, the bond slowly becomes more mutual, though the power imbalance remains. Louise is also on good terms with Sara, another Shadow, suggesting a degree of social alignment based on shared narcissism.
Notable abilities include her soot power, which allows her to manipulate others if her soot is consumed. This ability lets her control the thoughts and movements of those who ingest her soot, making her a potentially dangerous opponent. She also uses her soot to direct Lou’s actions, such as forcing her to clean at double speed or to make specific facial expressions. Louise’s development is marked by a shift from treating Lou as a mere object to acknowledging her as a being with needs, ultimately aligning her with the rebellion against the house’s oppressive structure.
