Description
John, a faceless soot-being known as a Shadow within Shadows House, boasts an extroverted, impulsive, and physically robust nature. His dedicated Living Doll, Shaun—originally named John from Mirrorside Village—serves as his "face," displaying a contrasting thoughtful, introverted, and observant personality. Before pairing with John, Shaun was Mirrorside's top student and aided Emilico's infiltration into the Shadows House selection by providing her the name "Kate."
Possessing exceptionally high soot quantity, John manifests abilities like the offensive "John Punch," which emits powerful blasts from his fists, and later develops the defensive "John Shield." His soot becomes visibly apparent during intense emotions, resembling fireworks. Defying Shadows House norms dictating Living Dolls should mimic their masters, John treats Shaun as an equal. He even offers to wear glasses to accommodate Shaun's poor eyesight, allowing Shaun to use his own without suspicion. Their mutual care includes nightly goodnight kisses.
During the Debut arc, John escapes confinement using his soot strength and impulsively proposes marriage to Kate, though she declines. He assists Emilico and Rum in locating their masters and partners with Shaun to pass the Debut trials. Notably, he destroys a rolling boulder to save Ricky, earning Ricky "points" in his spontaneous scoring system. When Shaun succumbs to brainwashing via soot coffee, John restores his consciousness through a deliberate fistfight, demonstrating their profound bond.
Shaun prioritizes John's well-being but challenges him when necessary, such as refusing the glasses proposal due to perceived risks. He forms close friendships with Emilico and Rum during the Phantom Incident night patrol; his intervention prevents Rum's disposal. Shaun also experiences jealousy over Emilico's interactions with others, revealing a deeper attachment. Post-Debut, he supports John during conflicts, like when Patrick and Ricky face near-fatal sabotage by Edward.
John develops respect for Kate's leadership, aiding her rebellion against the Shadows House hierarchy. He disguises himself as a veiled doll to infiltrate the Lord Grandfather's wing, using his soot abilities to help Kate and Emilico escape Edward. A small soot creature later guides him to safety, hinting at unseen allies. Shaun grapples with self-worth after recovering memories of his human past but finds purpose in his role beside John. His background reveals he was a protective older sibling in Mirrorside Village who intervened to reassure Shirley about joining the selection.
John dislikes carrots and tries hiding them from Shaun, who insists on proper nutrition. Shaun occasionally sings for John, reflecting their quiet moments of trust.
