Patrick, who answers to Ricky as a Living Doll, comes from Mirrorside Village, where he went to school with John, Louise, and Shirley. As a child, his serious nature often led to fights with John, earning them both the teacher’s reprimands. He shared a close bond with Louise, though she teased him constantly. On the eve of the Shadows House selection, Louise persuaded him to visit the circus. There they met an orphan girl, later called Emilico. To help her enter the selection, the group gave her the false name “Kate,” and Patrick styled her hair to look more presentable, a trick he learned from his older sister. After the selection, he was brainwashed with coffee and taken to the Shadows House, where a morph approached him.

As the Living Doll Ricky, he serves the Shadow Patrick. Ricky has short, neatly styled blonde hair brushed back in a noble fashion, blue eyes with long lashes, and very pale skin. He usually wears the standard male doll uniform or a Portrait when acting as Patrick’s face. Before coming to the Shadows House, his hair covered his left eye. He wore a white high-collared shirt, a green sweater vest, light brown shorts, white crew socks, and dark brown loafers which he boasted were made of fine fabric.

Ricky first appears arrogant and self-centered, masking deep insecurities by acting superior. He is strategic, carefully maneuvering to raise his master’s status. In time, a kinder, sensitive, and emotionally vulnerable side emerges. He grows deeply loyal to Patrick, advising him and working to preserve his standing. He also develops romantic feelings for Lou, worrying for her safety and blushing around her. His relationships with others, like Emilico and Shaun, shift from rivalry to cooperation and support.

The Shadow Patrick mirrors Ricky’s silhouette exactly, a soot-black figure with well-kept hair. His outfit is green plaid Victorian wear with puffy sleeves, white shoulder pads, a large white bow, a brown belt, beige shorts, long white socks, and brown boots. Like Ricky, he acts arrogantly and confidently, dutiful and loyal, but is deeply insecure over his low soot power, suffering anxiety and panic attacks. He leans heavily on Ricky for guidance and emotional support. After the debut, he becomes more humble and open. He develops a crush on Emilico after her kindness during the debut, and when flustered near her, his soot sometimes escapes in heart shapes.

Patrick’s soot power cancels other soot abilities on contact. Its texture is very fine, spreading thinly when he feels anger or anxiety. The ability can trigger against his will in moments of high emotion.

Their bond is built on mutual dependence and trust. Patrick sees Ricky as irreplaceable and extraordinary, seeking his counsel and dreading the idea of losing him. Ricky is fiercely loyal, swearing on Patrick’s name to prove his honesty and constantly devising plans to improve Patrick’s position. After facing their fears, they call each other soulmates, supporting one another to fight their insecurities.

In the debut arc, Patrick and Ricky take part in the examinations. Patrick is trapped inside a box within a garden maze, where Emilico comforts him with an orange slice and a flower before Ricky arrives to free him. They later give Emilico shears to help her pass. Though they succeed, they rank near the bottom, drawing laughter from older Shadows. Patrick turns to Ricky for reassurance, choosing to trust his lead.

Later, during the kidnapping incident, they work with Kate’s group to rescue Emilico, showing increased teamwork. Patrick also steps in to aid Barbara during a soot seizure by offering her a calming flower, revealing his compassion. Ricky supports Patrick emotionally in turn, singing to soothe him.

Ricky’s past in the village includes a competitive streak with John (Shaun). He was a diligent student, quick to defend Emilico from unfairness, and the first to volunteer for the selection meeting. Freed from brainwashing, he initially panics, fearing Shadows as enemies, but is calmed by Patrick’s protective gestures.

Patrick’s relationships extend to others: teased by Louise, yet trusted by her—she shares her soot and confides in him. He holds respect for Barbara and tries to ease her pain. His dynamic with John remains combative; though they often fight, they still see each other as friends. He earns respect from Margaret, who offers him a flower as a sign of friendship, though he remains unaware of her feelings.

Both characters evolve from arrogance toward greater empathy and honesty. Ricky shifts from cunning tactics to genuine care and openness. Patrick grows from a place of insecurity and dependence into a more confident, humble person, openly pursuing his affection for Emilico despite the rules. Their connection deepens through shared vulnerability and mutual support.
