Description
Patrick is a Shadow, one of the side protagonists in Shadows House. Like all Shadows, he appears as a pitch-black figure whose form mirrors that of his Living Doll, Ricky, who serves as his face and attendant. Ricky is a Living Doll, a human servant assigned to clean the soot Patrick produces and to act as his visible expression within the manor.

In terms of background, Ricky was made to be Patrick's Living Doll and is part of Billy's team of children preparing for their Debut, alongside classmates such as Emilico, Lou, Shaun, and Rum. Before arriving at the mansion, Ricky was known in his hometown as a dedicated student who always tried his best. He is especially competitive with John and Shaun, always wanting to outperform them.

Personality-wise, Patrick strives to behave like an excellent nobleman and sometimes makes comments that seem to look down on others, though this behavior stems from his youth rather than genuine malice. He presents himself as confident and self-assured, but beneath the surface he is anxious and insecure, which is why he leans so heavily on Ricky. Ricky, for his part, appears proud, haughty, and self-centered, often belittling others to assert his own superiority. This confident exterior hides a kind and sensitive nature; Kate once observed that Ricky is putting on a brave face but is actually very gentle.

Patrick's main motivation is to succeed and be recognized as a proper noble Shadow, and he participates in the children's Debut, the trial that determines a Shadow's standing in the house. Ricky is devoted to Patrick's success and advises him from the sidelines, but in practice he often takes the lead, making most decisions while Patrick defers and asks what Ricky would think in a given situation. Ricky's analytical mind and quick thinking make him the more strategic of the pair, and he is also driven by ambition to climb the social hierarchy of the manor. In the story, the two act as supporting figures among the child Shadows, navigating the Debut and the pressures of life in the house together.

The relationship between Patrick and Ricky is one of deep mutual trust. Patrick trusts Ricky's judgment completely, once stating that there is no way Ricky would lie to him. After openly discussing their insecurities, their bond becomes stronger and more open, with Patrick describing their connection as one of soulmates. They work to lift each other up so that neither feels inferior. Ricky also develops romantic feelings for Lou, another Living Doll, and shows genuine concern for her welfare. Early on, he is dismissive of other dolls, particularly Emilico, whom he holds in low regard.

In terms of development, Patrick's reliance on Ricky goes beyond practical matters; he sometimes determines the emotions he should show by reading Ricky's expression, showing how closely his identity is tied to his Living Doll. Over time, both characters become more honest about their feelings, and their partnership grows more equal and communicative. As a Shadow, Patrick can generate and control soot, the substance that defines the powers of Shadows and is central to the Debut. Ricky has no soot abilities himself; his strengths lie in his intelligence, perceptiveness, and the diligence he brings to his duties as a Living Doll.
