Description
Larhart, also spelled Lahart, is a half-Darkling born to a Darkling father and a human mother. This heritage granted him purple skin, distinct facial markings, and elongated pointed ears. Persecuted by humans during Hadlar's war, he and his mother were cast out, leading to her eventual death from illness. Baran discovered and adopted the orphaned Larhart, integrating him into the Dragon Legion as one of the three Dragon Masters, where he earned the title "Land Rider."
Initially loyal to Baran, Larhart participated in retrieving Baran's son, Dai. Traveling to Teran Castle, Larhart and fellow Dragon Masters Galdandy and Borahorn were ambushed by Popp. Witnessing Popp and later Hyunckel defeat his comrades, Larhart confronted Hyunckel. He revealed his weapon, the Dark Armour Spear – forged by Lon Beruk as the sister counterpart to Hyunckel's Dark Armour Sword. Their duel ended with Larhart's defeat by Hyunckel's Grand Cross technique. In his final moments, he entrusted Hyunckel with his spear, urging him to free Baran from hatred.
Baran later resurrected Larhart using his dragon blood, though the revival took longer than expected. Awakening to find his fellow Dragon Masters dead, Larhart aligned himself with Dai's cause, recognizing Dai as the inheritor of Baran's will. This marked his shift from antagonist to ally. He rescued Hyunckel and Hym from King Maximum at Vearn's palace, reclaiming his Dark Armour Spear to obliterate their foes with his Sunder Claw technique. He subsequently aided the heroes against Mystvearn and Vearn's forces, ultimately traveling alongside Hyunckel after the world's salvation.
In combat, Larhart specialized in thrust-based spear techniques, leveraging exceptional speed for evasion and momentum-driven repositioning. His signature move, Sunder Claw, involved an aerial spin releasing a destructive shockwave. The extendable Dark Armour Spear provided resistance against magic and breath attacks. Post-resurrection, the infusion of Baran's dragon blood potentially amplified his abilities, though the exact extent remained unclear.
Personality-wise, Larhart exhibited a stern, honor-bound demeanor. While harboring disdain for humans due to past persecution, his primary motivation was unwavering loyalty to Baran. He despised underhanded tactics, executing Borahorn for using a hostage, deeming it dishonorable to the Dragon Legion. His sense of nobility persisted after joining Dai's allies, driven by commitment to Baran's legacy.
Beyond the main series, Larhart appeared in spin-off media. In *Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai - A Hero's Bonds*, he debuted as a boss in the 8th story chapter before becoming a playable character during the "A Loyal Land Rider's Pledge" event. As a playable unit, he inflicted thrust and shadow damage, with stats emphasizing physical attack (443) and endurance. His "Soul" abilities enhanced thrust/shadow damage and provided defensive/offensive boosts after consecutive skill usage. In *Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest - The Adventure of Dai*, he featured as a boss in story mode and the Temple of Recollection, utilizing rapid spear strikes while clad in the Dark Armour Spear's full form. He also appeared in *Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light* as a synthesizable S-rank monster, evolving into SS-rank "Land Rider Larhart" with upgraded skills like Sunder Claw and Flash Multithrust.
A notable trivia detail involves his design: prior to the 2020 anime adaptation, merchandise occasionally depicted him with light blue skin instead of purple, as seen in *Dragon Quest of the Stars* and *Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light*.
