Description
Mama is the family's stabilizing maternal figure, wife to Papa and mother to Bakabon and Hajime, residing in Tokyo's Naka-ochiai neighborhood. Their home displays a "Bakabon" nameplate solely for their son's recognition, as the family lacks a surname and she is known only as "Mama."

Tall and slender, she often towers over her shorter husband. Her character design evolved, featuring smaller eyes initially that gradually became rounder and more prominent. She typically wears a dress or blouse with a skirt, an apron, and simple shoes or sandals. Her hair, pitch-black in the original manga, sometimes appears brown in anime adaptations.

She attended Kuroyuri Women's University, a parody of Shirayuri, where she excelled academically and was considered the "Madonna" of her class. During this time, Papa observed her through a telescope while attending Bakada University, nicknaming her "Shungiku no Kimi." He impulsively proposed with pampas grass, though she hesitated due to unfamiliarity. Her perspective changed after a stranger harassed her in a park; when she called out and Papa intervened, she accepted his proposal. An early date anecdote involves Papa revealing moles on his buttocks.

Her personality is patient, gentle, and pragmatic in managing the household. She calmly endures the family's antics but exhibits fierce anger when subjected to extreme pranks or if her children are endangered. Hobbies include reading fairy tales and newspapers. She prioritizes cleanliness, notably appalled by a neighbor's untidy home, and harbors a strong repulsion toward frogs, snakes, and insects. Despite Papa's unemployment and erratic behavior, she remains a devoted wife and mother, the family's emotional anchor. Fujio Akatsuka designed her as the antithesis to Papa and Bakabon's foolishness.

Mama appears across all manga serializations and anime adaptations (1971, 1975–1977, 1990, 1999–2000, 2018), maintaining her core traits while some adaptations emphasize her terrifying reactions to pranks or physical strength protecting her children. She also features in spin-offs and crossovers like the theatrical film *The Genius Bakavon: ~Reviving the Dog of Flanders~*, live-action TV specials (2016–2018), and educational OVAs such as *Nyarome's Fun Mathematics Classroom*, her sensible nature contrasting with surrounding absurdity.

Apocryphal names like "Akko" or "Acchan" appear in the episode "A Fool Should Be Made in Japan," spoken by an old friend, but are not considered canonical. Similarly, an anime adaptation altered the "Shungiku no Kimi" nickname into a potential given name, though this remains unofficial.
