TV-Series
Description
Jyūbei is a recurring character who operates a shop known as Shikabaneya, working as a corpse dealer in the feudal era. He functions as a key figure in the bounty hunting trade, employing other characters to slay demons and then purchasing the remains or proof of their destruction.
In terms of appearance, Jyūbei is a middle-aged man with slicked-back brown hair. He possesses a mustache and a beard, and his most distinguishing physical trait is a prominent scar that runs across his right eyebrow and eye. His personality is defined by a notable greed and stinginess, as he habitually keeps the majority of the profits from bounties for himself. Despite this, he is generally polite and respectful toward his best customer, a character named Riku, whose generous payments he appreciates.
Jyūbei’s primary role in the story is as an employer and information source for the half-demon princess Moroha. He assigns her missions to hunt demons, and in return, she brings him the spoils, allowing her to make a living. However, he consistently maintains that she owes him an immense fortune for unknown reasons, a debt he uses to justify taking a large cut of her earnings. He values her work for its quality but remains firm in his business practices, once even denying payment for a slain demon when the required proof was destroyed by others.
His key relationships are professional in nature. He took in the young tanuki demon Takechiyo at the behest of the monk Miroku, raising him by putting him to work at the shop. Takechiyo later assists Jyūbei with errands and helps keep an eye on Moroha during her missions. Jyūbei is also acquainted with the wolf demon Yawaragi, and he introduces Moroha to her. His business is sustained by the patronage of Riku, whose requests he feels compelled to follow due to the high payments he receives. In the second act, Jyūbei reappears after being absent for most of the season, indicating his continued presence in the underworld business following major shifts in power.
Concerning notable abilities, Jyūbei is not portrayed as a frontline fighter. His significance comes from his business acumen and network. At one point, he came into possession of a Green Rainbow Pearl, which brought him unusually good fortune in attracting a horde of demon bounties to his business. His development throughout the series is subtle; he remains a consistent and greedy merchant, but his interactions reveal a web of obligations to powerful clients like Riku, suggesting he is a node in a larger network of information and trade.
