Description
Jashin-kun, also known by his original name and title Abyssbel=Jashin-Tei, is an ancient and powerful being from the anime Duel Masters Win: Duel Wars. He is a legendary dark god and the former ruler of a primordial world of demonic creatures, having once reigned as the Demon King over the Abyss Realm. Following a catastrophic rule, he was sealed away for ten thousand years. His slumber is ended when he is unexpectedly awakened by the young duelist Win Kirifuda, who summons him from a mystical card that appeared in his deck during a duel. Upon his resurrection, Jashin-kun finds himself trapped in a greatly diminished and comical form, appearing as a small, human-sized mascot-like creature with deformed and amusing features, a stark contrast to his original majestic and terrifying appearance as a demon king. This unexpected transformation is a source of great dismay for him, and he often laments his powerless condition.
Jashin-kun possesses a complex and often contradictory personality. In his past life, he was a ruthless and brutal tyrant who did not hesitate to destroy anyone who stood in his way. While he retains the proud, arrogant, and charismatic air of a dark sovereign, especially when interacting with his former subjects, his current circumstances force him into the role of a clumsy and comedic mascot. He is frequently capricious and prone to humorous outbursts, yet he remains cunning and calculating. Despite his apparent incompetence at times, he possesses immense erudition and a sharp, methodical intellect, capable of achieving top scores on university-level academic tests. One of his most notable and exploitable weaknesses is his great fondness for human food, particularly octopus-shaped sausages, which can easily pacify him and make him docile and manipulable. His outward behavior often swings between making grand, threatening declarations and engaging in silly, slapstick situations.
Jashin-kun's primary motivation is to regain his original power and form. He is determined to once again become the undisputed sovereign of the demon world and reclaim his lost glory. To achieve this, he needs to collect special Abyss cards, which sporadically manifest through Win's emotional growth or the evolution of their partnership. His role in the story is that of a powerful but dependent partner to Win Kirifuda. He is bound to Win by a tacit contract and must cooperate with the young duelist out of necessity, as his powers are severely restricted and can only be fully utilized during duels. Outside of these duels, he is largely harmless and forced to adapt to daily human life, often following Win around and becoming an integral part of his entourage. He is affectionately nicknamed Jashin-kun by his human companions.
His central relationship is with Win Kirifuda, a bond defined by mutual dependence. Jashin-kun relies on Win to summon him and channel his power, while Win gains access to Jashin-kun's immense, duel-restricted abilities. Despite his attempts to act as a superior emperor, Jashin-kun is frequently manipulated by Win, often using food as a bargaining chip, making him as much a manipulated companion as a partner in battle. With his former subordinates, the Abyss Royals, he tries to maintain his regal and tyrannical status. While they often tease him about his current, less intimidating form, they also seem to retain a genuine loyalty and affection for their former king, assisting him in his quest. In the parallel world of Duel Masters LOST, it is suggested that a much deeper bond exists between him and Win, as he references a forgotten pact and a shared past with Win before the boy lost his memory, though Win himself does not remember him and considers him a monster.
Throughout the series, Jashin-kun shows notable development. His relationship with Win gradually evolves from one of transactional dependency and resentment to a reluctant alliance marked by a hidden protective instinct. When his emotions are intensely stirred, his body can literally explode, generating small, beloved demon familiars called Noir Abyss, whom he cherishes as his own children. This emotional fragility also allows for more powerful transformations. When provoked, he can tap into his dark mana and evolve into "Abyssbel=Ha=Lord," a form that changes his personality, giving him a rough, regional dialect and the manner of a delinquent, as well as increased ferocity. By resonating with Win, he can achieve his ultimate form, "Abyssbel=Hatou=Jashin-tei".
Jashin-kun possesses a range of notable abilities, though they are almost exclusively usable during duels. In theory, he holds the power to destroy entire worlds and manipulate space. He can manifest objects from the top of his head, such as mechanical arms and hammers, which he uses for both comedic gags and punishments. He is capable of dragging other duelists into a special dimension known as the "World of the Demon God" or "Jashin's World," where he presides over the "Jashin Duel". In this space, the loser, or those connected to them, is subjected to the infamous "Jashin Time," a series of punishments that are both cruel and humorous, ranging from forced labor on giant machines and extraction of "duel-sang" (duel-blood) via syringe, to being thrown into lava pits or turned into cards. These events are magically unrecordable and are remembered by victims as a strange dream. He can also absorb ambient dark mana when the opportunity arises.
