Description
The Dragon, alternately called the Wyrm or Grigori, is a colossal red dragon. It steals the protagonist's heart during its assault on the fishing village of Cassardis, transforming the victim into the Arisen – one destined to confront the Wyrm and halt an impending apocalypse.
This entity possesses immense size and formidable strength, reflected in its statistics: 100,000 health points, 1,250 attack power, and 260 defense. Its magick attack reaches 600, supported by 280 magick defense, and it weighs approximately 100,000 units.
In combat, the Dragon employs diverse techniques: physical assaults like body slams, stomps, dives, tail whips, and sweeps; magickal attacks including fire breath, fiery drive-bys, long-range fireballs, flame eruptions, high levin, high frigor, high bolide, and holy furor; and special maneuvers such as roaring to kill pawns and stagger the Arisen, wing buffets to create distance, and grabbing pawns to turn them against the Arisen or seizing the Arisen for crushing impacts.
Strategically, the Dragon's heart remains its sole vulnerability. Inflicting significant damage necessitates striking this exposed point, often requiring climbing onto its body. The Wyrm shows vulnerability to dark-based enchantments, poison, and silence, while resisting fire and holy elements. Tactics include targeting its fingers during spellcasting to interrupt attacks or using ballistae for concentrated heart damage.
Lore positions the Dragon as a recurring entity emerging every few decades or centuries to instigate global chaos. Each appearance coincides with surges in monster populations. Following initial devastation, it typically retreats to a prominent location, like a mountain summit, seemingly awaiting confrontation.
A deeper narrative reveals the Dragon was once an Arisen who failed to defeat the Seneschal, the cosmic entity maintaining the world's existence. Transformed as a consequence, its purpose shifts to testing subsequent Arisen candidates. Claiming hearts grants conditional immortality to those Arisen—they cease aging while their heart remains in its possession. Should the Dragon perish, all affected individuals regain mortality and experience accelerated aging.
During the climactic encounter at The Tainted Mountain, the Dragon presents the Arisen with a critical choice: battle to reclaim their heart, or sacrifice a beloved person in exchange for worldly power and dominion over Gransys. Accepting this bargain transforms the Arisen into the Dragon's thrall. Victory in combat reclaims the heart, restoring mortality to all connected Arisen, including previous figures like Duke Edmun Dragonsbane.
The Dragon's existence is intrinsically tied to a cyclical cosmic system overseen by the Seneschal. An Arisen defeating the Dragon must then confront the Seneschal itself. Losing this final battle results in the Arisen's transformation into the next Dragon, perpetuating the cycle to test future candidates.
