Description
Somali is a young human girl discovered sheltering under a tree by the forest guardian Golem after escaping a destroyed transport cart for human prisoners. She alone survived an accident that killed her captors and fellow prisoners. Upon meeting Golem, she instantly calls him "Father," beginning their journey through a world where humans are nearly extinct and hunted as prey. Her past before this remains a mystery.
In appearance, Somali has a fair complexion, large amber eyes, and medium-length black hair fading to light green at the ends. She wears a hooded black cape lined with red, featuring false minotaur horns for disguise, secured by studded black straps. Her attire includes brown boots fastened with dark brown ribbons. In safe, enclosed spaces, she dons simpler clothing like a black sweater and grey leggings.
Playful, affectionate, and carelessly optimistic, Somali displays boundless curiosity. She often strays from Golem to investigate new sights, animals, or colorful objects, frequently leading her into peril. She adores interacting with animals, especially fluffy ones. Despite environmental dangers, she exhibits bravery and forgiveness toward friends. A recurring fear of abandonment—particularly that Golem will leave after their journey—drives impulsive actions, like nearly drowning while retrieving fragments of his shattered arm from a river.
Her development centers on deepening bonds with Golem and encounters with diverse cultures. Early in their travels, a False Cat lures her into an alley in a Traveler’s Village, nearly exposing her humanity before Golem intervenes. Later, an injury from chasing rabbits leads to medical care by the oni herbalist Shizuno and assistant Yabashira, highlighting her vulnerability and Golem’s growing protectiveness.
In Anthole City, Somali befriends Kikila, a young woolly shurigara. This friendship spurs her to confront her separation fears, culminating in a secret journey into an underground cavern to retrieve a wish-granting Yozame flower to ensure Golem stays. This act exhausts her, causing illness, during which Golem reaffirms his commitment. Her emotional dependence surfaces when she extracts his promise to stay indefinitely, despite his awareness of his limited lifespan.
Throughout their journey, Somali’s resilience and capacity for connection are tested. She interacts with other humans like Haitora—disguised as a falcohol—and the harpy Uzoi he cares for. Yet her focus remains on Golem, whom she unequivocally views as her father. Her experiences underscore themes of trust and the yearning for familial permanence in a hostile world.
