Description
Ikuya Kirishima is a male character first encountered as a junior high student at Iwatobi Junior High School. He joined the swim club there, captained by his older brother, Natsuya Kirishima. Initially sharing a close bond, their relationship fractured when Natsuya deliberately distanced himself to push Ikuya toward independence. This rejection fostered deep cynicism and distrust in Ikuya, making him resistant to activities linked to Natsuya, including swimming. Teammates Haruka Nanase, Makoto Tachibana, and Asahi Shiina ultimately persuaded him to join.

Physically, Ikuya possesses dark teal hair, dark amber eyes, and notably long black eyelashes. He stood at 143 cm (4'8") in junior high, growing to 173 cm (5'8") in high school and reaching 176 cm (5'9") by university. He maintains a lean, muscular build characterized as slightly above average musculature while remaining comparatively slender. His typical expression is serious. For competitions, he wears black jammers featuring subtle brown and gray designs.

Specializing in breaststroke during junior high, Ikuya was part of a successful medley relay team with Makoto (backstroke), Haruka (freestyle), and Asahi (butterfly). His swimming was driven by intense perfectionism and overtraining, leading him to practice intermittent hypoxic training. This caused near-drowning incidents requiring hospitalization, contributing to a developing fear of water, which he viewed as an "enemy" binding him. Despite his talent, he grappled with fragile self-esteem and secretly admired Haruka's confidence in the water.

A core aspect of Ikuya's personality was his declaration to "never be ordinary." This drive, combined with his health struggles, created a complex relationship with swimming. After moving to America with Natsuya, he relied heavily on Hiyori Tono, who became his closest friend. Hiyori was tasked with monitoring Ikuya's health, a responsibility that strained their friendship as Ikuya remained unaware of Hiyori's own burdens.

The dissolution of the Iwatobi junior high swim team profoundly impacted Ikuya. Haruka quit competitive swimming following a falling out with Rin Matsuoka, breaking a promise to swim together again. Makoto left to support Haruka, and Asahi moved away. Feeling abandoned and betrayed, Ikuya harbored resentment and relocated to America. He later returned to Japan, attending Shionezaki High School with Hiyori. During this period, Ikuya worked to master all four swimming strokes, evolving into a strong Individual Medley (IM) competitor, with a freestyle technique notably resembling Haruka's.

Ikuya's emotional struggles were intertwined with his repeated readings of Hans Christian Andersen's *The Little Mermaid*, a gift from his father acquired in America. He interpreted the story metaphorically, relating to Ariel's sacrifice of her aquatic ease for human legs and enduring pain. This symbolized his own perceived need to confront personal demons and "walk" in a challenging environment to move forward.

Upon entering Shimogami University, Ikuya reconnected with his former junior high teammates. Initial reconciliation attempts were fraught; Ikuya brushed off apologies and displayed lingering resentment. He eventually acknowledged his past hurt—his desire for friendship, team belonging, and inspiration from Haruka—and reconciled with Haruka by swimming an Individual Medley alongside him. This act, coupled with mending his relationships with Natsuya and Hiyori, marked a turning point. Ikuya began to see himself in a more "humanized" way while retaining a strong competitive drive.

In later global competitions, Ikuya competed as part of the Japan National Swim Team. He participated in a four-swimmer medley relay at the Fukuoka Tournament alongside Rin Matsuoka, Haruka Nanase, and Sosuke Yamazaki, achieving first place, solidifying his commitment to high-level competition.

Personality-wise, Ikuya evolved from a quiet, isolated individual into someone capable of enjoying camaraderie, though he occasionally reverted to insecurity. His journey involved overcoming internal turmoil, accepting his brother's intentions, and gradually opening up to friendships. Trivia notes include his Pisces zodiac sign, a beluga whale motif, a fondness for squirrels, and favorite foods including fried shrimp, sweet tamagoyaki, and pistachio cream. He also harbored a wish for a younger brother.
