Description
Cikapasi is an Ainu boy from a village near Otaru, Hokkaido. Orphaned by smallpox that claimed his parents and older siblings, he is raised by the village elders. His parents named him "Cikapasi," meaning "he who makes birds fly," though historical Ainu linguistic records also note a colloquial interpretation referencing an erect penis ("cika" for penis, "asi" for standing). This name later connects thematically to hunter Tetsuzou Nihei's exclamatory use of "boner."

Physically, Cikapasi has long dark hair tied in a topknot, bushy eyebrows, and black eyes. His face is often dirt-smudged, inspired by the "Pig-Pen" character. He wears traditional Ainu attire: an attus garment, tekunpe hand coverings, hoop earrings, and oryukker deerskin boots in cold weather. He is shorter and lighter than Asirpa.

Initially a loner avoiding other children, Cikapasi displays curiosity, particularly toward hunting. He admires skilled marksmanship, witnessed when Genjirou Tanigaki kills a deer. His personality includes a perverted streak, with fixations on breasts and inappropriate touching. Despite comedic traits, loneliness and a desire for family drive his actions, like secretly following Tanigaki and Inkarmat to Barato. Confronted, he states no one awaits him in the village, prompting Inkarmat to suggest posing as a family for discretion.

Cikapasi's development intertwines with Tanigaki and Inkarmat. He encourages Tanigaki to save Inkarmat from assailants, framing her as family, which catalyzes their emotional bond. He aids practically, identifying Inkarmat's location during conflicts and alerting Asirpa to Tanigaki's peril. Later, he joins Sugimoto's group traveling to Karafuto (Sakhalin). There, he bonds with Karafuto Ainu girl Enonoka, who gifts him a hohciri ornament—a cultural item worn by boys until they independently kill a wolverine, symbolizing his growth though he initially requires Tanigaki's help.

In Toyohara, Cikapasi assists Sugimoto's group with the Yamada Troupe circus. He volunteers for a spinning-top act, vomiting from dizziness during the performance, and aids Sugimoto's staged harakiri by pouring water. He witnesses Russian assassins attack Sugimoto and participates in the troupe's final bow. Surviving a blizzard while crossing the national border by sheltering with Sugimoto, Tanigaki, and Ryu using sled parts and dog body heat, he helps a Russian couple prepare food afterward, learning the Russian word for "delicious" ("vkusno").

Cikapasi's background echoes an Ainu folktale about a smallpox survivor, coincidentally paralleling his introduction where Tanigaki skins a fawn—mirroring the folktale's offering of fawn legs to smallpox gods. His relationships evolve from isolation to found family, particularly with Tanigaki as a father figure and Inkarmat. His hunting and survival skills progress, though he remains reliant on adult support.
