Description
Romero is an undead toy poodle owned by Kotaro Tatsumi. He holds the distinction of being the first successfully resurrected zombie and the first to gain consciousness, as well as the sole known zombified animal. His resurrection occurred long before Franchouchou's formation, and he served as a companion to the necromancer Jofuku since ancient times before being entrusted to Kotaro for the Zombie Land Saga Project.

Originally from the late 1800s, Romero belonged to the Momozaki Family during the Meiji era, specifically around 1882, already existing as a zombie. He later entered Kotaro's care. His biological death happened one month after his third birthday, sharing a date of death with Junko Konno.

In his regular form, Romero resembles a small blue-furred poodle marked by visible stitches, bandages, and a bruise shaped like Saga Prefecture on his right side. He possesses a doll-like right eye, long blood-stained fangs, and frequently appears with detachable limbs. His monstrous form is larger and more detailed, featuring an eye protruding from its socket and a more prominent Saga-shaped scar; he uses this form to deter unwanted attention.

Despite his undead nature, Romero displays typical canine behavior. He is loyal to Kotaro and Franchouchou, often acting as their guardian. He enjoys dried squid—a food unsafe for living dogs—and exhibits extreme omnivorous tendencies, consuming non-edible objects like baseballs and insects. He forms close bonds with the girls, particularly Sakura Minamoto, accompanying her on morning jogs and protecting her fiercely after she is hit by a truck. He shares a unique friendship with Tae Yamada, spending time running errands and interacting with locals alongside her.

His abilities include enhanced senses, immortality, detachable limbs that reattach easily, and phosphorescent vision. He can transform into a monstrous state to appear more aggressive, a trait shared with Tae. Romero also demonstrates unexpected skills, such as fishing, in his savage form.

Functionally, Romero serves as Franchouchou's mascot and unofficial guardian. In his monstrous form, he scares away intruders and prevents outsiders from discovering the girls' zombie identities. Unlike the idols, he requires no cosmetic disguise in public, with his undead appearance often overlooked. He appears in merchandise and group activities, reinforcing his role within the project.

Romero's name references George A. Romero, director of *Night of the Living Dead*, aligning with the series' zombie themes.
