Description
Haruto Ichihara, nicknamed Haru, is a human male from the real world, Ichi no Kuni. A popular high school student and star basketball player, he shows athletic prowess through his sports performance. His enduring friendship with Yusuke Ninomiya began in childhood when Yusuke saved him from a dog attack Haru accidentally provoked. Haru dates Kotona Takashina, a central relationship within their friend group.

Personality-wise, Haru exhibits confidence, extroversion, and a fun-loving nature, contrasting with Yusuke's reserve. He leans toward impulsiveness, initially dismissing experiences in the parallel fantasy world Ni no Kuni as a dream. His primary motivation is protecting Kotona. This escalates into intense jealousy and desperation after she is critically injured by a mysterious assailant and later diagnosed with a malignant tumor. Driven to save her, he contemplates killing Princess Astrid—Kotona's counterpart in Ni no Kuni—under the false belief it would cure Kotona. This decision temporarily aligns him with the antagonist Galeroth and the Black Banner faction.

Galeroth manipulates Haru by exploiting his protective instincts, providing Black Banner armor that amplifies his strength and combat abilities while secretly enabling mind control. Wearing this armor, Haru participates in the assault on Evermore Castle and battles Yusuke, nearly killing each other before both are transported back to their world, significantly straining their friendship. Haru later redeems himself by joining Yusuke and Astrid to confront Galeroth, ultimately delivering the fatal blow with the legendary sword Mornstar.

Following Galeroth's defeat—revealed as the disguised Crown Prince Sedulus Astrum—Haru returns through a dimensional portal. He awakens in a hospital to find Kotona and Yusuke's adoptive sister Saki recovered, but their memories of Yusuke vanished. Haru alone remembers Yusuke, leading him to recognize Yusuke as his soulmate—a being intrinsically connected across both worlds. This realization concludes his arc with loss and acceptance.

His abilities extend beyond basketball into combat proficiency within Ni no Kuni, where he demonstrates natural swordsmanship and enhanced physical prowess, further augmented by the Black Banner armor. The name "Haruto" combines the Japanese words for "spring" (春) and "person" (人), while his surname "Ichihara" means "city, market" (市) and "field, plain" (原).
