Don Matsugorou is a talking dog belonging to novelist Mr. Matsuzawa in Chiba Prefecture. Only the daughter, Kazuko, knows of his ability to speak like a human. He clashes violently with King, the neighbor's nouveau-riche mongrel dog, whose ambitions exceed his station. The fight leaves Don badly injured, requiring veterinary care. While recovering at the clinic, Don finds himself smitten with Chotaro, a patchwork puppy.
