Description
Schmelman Bach, Field Marshal of the Special Service unit, projects calm strategic leadership, excelling in military planning and troop coordination via communications tech. His appearance features long blonde hair, frequently closed eyes that snap open in hostility, and heterochromia in the anime adaptation. He wears the Special Service uniform with a monocle of ambiguous purpose.

His personality blends outward composure and adaptability with capacity for extreme violence and sadism. Before the Abandonment War 300 years prior, he showed genuine concern for students at the 13th Special Military Forces School, particularly Class A. He advocated non-lethal combat and fostered mentor bonds, becoming an adoptive father figure to the orphaned Rihito Sakai (later Licht Bach). His affection included storytelling and protectiveness. Personal tragedies shaped him: childhood abuse led to accidental matricide when his powers manifested, and adult infertility contributed to his wife's suicide, fueling his desire for family.

Co-developing the "Aerial Ace Project" during the war, Schmelman oversaw experimental surgeries using replicated Ballot technology to enhance soldiers. He reluctantly authorized the procedure for Rihito after learning his genetic material caused violent side effects in others. The war profoundly altered him, steering him towards manipulation and cruelty. Post-war, the original Schmelman died, replaced by a clone secretly created 300 years earlier by scientist Firenda. This clone inherited memories and physical traits but developed intensified sadism and emotional dependency on Firenda, whom he viewed as a mother figure.

As the clone, Schmelman orchestrated systemic oppression through the Count-based hierarchy. He manipulated former students and Barons by exploiting vulnerabilities, deploying brainwashed clones of Class A to impersonate originals. His tactics employed psychological warfare, like triggering berserker states in cloned soldiers to force adversaries into lethal confrontations. He maintained ideological opposition to reopening borders with the Abyss, advocating containment. Key conflicts saw him mortally wound Gespenst Zerlegen (Pele Poporo) for betrayal and battle Licht Bach, who exposed his cloned nature during their final confrontation. His defeat came after activating a failsafe driving cloned soldiers insane, prompting Licht to intervene and dismantle his control system.
