Cain Asbell, a shepherd, discovers the fairy Elise imprisoned in a cave and frees her. Elise guides him to rescue Princess Charlotte from bandits. Rewarded with lordship over Norland, Cain must transform it into the kingdom's most prosperous territory within five years to marry Charlotte—failure means losing his title and returning to his old life.

Initially inexperienced and exploited by slavers and bandits due to his youth, Cain nonetheless demonstrates kindness and strategic acumen. He attracts allies: Tsubaki, a swordswoman who becomes Norland’s Arms Trainer and later Captain of the Guard; Tia, a freed slave serving as his maid and gathering intelligence against rival Tedmond; and Chiffon, a half-elven priestess whose human distrust shifts to loyalty under Cain’s leadership. His primary foe is Francis, Tedmond’s cruel and aggressive lord.

Cain evolves from naivety to capable ruler through key events: Tsubaki secures the Dwarven Woodlands, Tia steals Tedmond’s battle plans, and Cain forges an alliance with Sandra, leader of the Emerald Fist bandits, who redeems herself to aid Norland against Francis. These efforts lead to Tedmond’s defeat, Francis’s capture, and Norland’s rise as the kingdom’s strongest territory. Cain marries Charlotte and ascends as king. Chiffon returns to her church, Tia remains his handmaid, and Sandra departs to begin anew.
