TV-Series
Description
Takao begins as a heavy cruiser in the Fleet of Fog's First Oriental Fleet, modeled after the WWII Takao-class warship. She initially embodies an antagonistic role marked by arrogance, haughtiness, and narcissism. Her defeat by I-401 and Gunzou Chihaya, where Gunzou temporarily locks her weapons through strategic deception, prompts deep reflection. This leads her to defect from the Fog and resolutely seek to join Gunzou's fleet, Blue Steel. Her vessel's color scheme shifts from red and dark-gray to blue and dark-gray upon this allegiance.

Her mental model manifests as a late-teen female with long blue hair and blue eyes. While serving the Fog, she wears minimal attire: a white dress and black pantyhose. After defecting, she adopts diverse human clothing and frequently changes her hairstyle, a unique trait among mental models. Her personality evolves from dramatic self-absorption to a calmer, observant demeanor. She develops a pronounced romantic interest in Gunzou, earning the moniker "Tsundere heavy cruiser" from other Fog vessels. Concurrently, she cultivates intense curiosity about human culture, interpersonal bonds, and anatomy.

In the manga continuity, Takao lives briefly among humans in the northern regions, forming a close bond with Saori Chihaya, Gunzou's mother. Saori teaches her domestic skills like cooking and sewing, fostering a mother-daughter dynamic where Saori expresses a wish for a daughter like her. Takao later moves to Iwo Jima, collaborating with the mental model Hyuuga in a failed scheme to win Gunzou's affection. Despite this, Gunzou integrates her into Blue Steel. During a military assault on Iwo Jima, she aids the crew's escape by generating human duplicates and piloting a decoy submarine. While guiding the decoy, she is ambushed by the submarine U-2501 and its fleet. She inflicts significant damage, destroying half of U-2501's mini-submarines and forcing the revelation of the Mirror-Ring System. However, an energy shockwave from this system obliterates her vessel and critically injures her mental model. Rescued by I-402, she is reactivated aboard the Fog flagship Yamato, which suppresses her battle memories and prevents her return to Gunzou, assigning I-402 as her minder. She later enrolls at the Japanese National Maritime Institute of Technology under the human alias "Aoki Takao."

The anime adaptation diverges significantly. After aiding in the defense of Iwo Jima alongside Hyuuga, Haruna, and Kirishima, Takao transports the vibration warhead prototype and searches for I-401 following its apparent destruction. Discovering Gunzou and Iona's union core in a wrecked escape capsule, she sacrifices her own hull and merges her union core with I-401 to restore them. This act destroys her physical vessel but preserves her consciousness within I-401's systems. Her mental model later reappears, though her hull remains unrepaired, likely due to insufficient nanomaterials.

Takao's capabilities include a formidable arsenal: 22 torpedo tubes, 73 photon cannons, 80 missile launchers, depth charges, and a Super-Graviton Cannon. Her wave-force armor provides robust defense, enduring multiple corrosive warhead impacts before saturation. Her computational processing power is moderately potent, resisting U-2501's assaults but notably inferior to Yamato's capabilities.

Interpersonally, she views Iona as a rival for Gunzou's attention, often diminishing her internally while cooperating fully in combat. Hyuuga serves as a partner in romantic scheming, though Takao questions her dignity as a battleship. She also develops a distinct interest in Kotono Amaha upon learning of Gunzou's past admiration for her and her connection to Yamato.
