Description
Born in East Blue, Roronoa Zoro is the son of Tera and Roronoa Arashi. His ancestry traces back to the Shimotsuki Family of Wano Country through his grandfather Roronoa Pinzoro and grandmother Shimotsuki Furiko, making him a descendant of the legendary samurai Shimotsuki Ryuma, though this lineage remained unknown to him early on. Training in swordsmanship at Shimotsuki Village's dojo, he vowed to become the world's greatest swordsman after the unexpected death of his childhood friend and distant cousin, Kuina. This promise fueled his lifelong dedication, driving him to develop the unique Three Sword Style, wielding one blade in each hand and a third in his mouth.

Originally a bounty hunter known as "Pirate Hunter Zoro," he earned notoriety capturing pirates for income. His path shifted when Monkey D. Luffy rescued him from execution in Shells Town. Recognizing Luffy's potential and shared values, Zoro became the first crewmember of the Straw Hat Pirates, serving as their combatant and de facto first mate. He pledged unwavering loyalty to Luffy, vowing never to lose again after a humiliating defeat by the world's greatest swordsman, Dracule Mihawk. This loyalty led him to risk his life for crewmates, offering his head to Bartholomew Kuma in exchange for Luffy's safety during the Thriller Bark incident.

Zoro exhibits a stern, serious demeanor, often distancing himself to train or sleep. Highly perceptive and pragmatic, he frequently acts as the crew's voice of reason during crises, such as insisting Usopp formally apologize after abandoning the crew. His personality includes a notorious lack of direction, causing comical misadventures while navigating. He adheres to a bushido-inspired code, refusing to attack opponents facing away unless allies are endangered and viewing back scars as a swordsman's disgrace. This code influenced his behavior in Wano Country, where he adopted samurai mannerisms and speech patterns while undercover. Despite his aloofness, he deeply values his crew, demonstrated when he protected them from Kuma's attack at great personal cost.

A master of Three Sword Style, Zoro employs techniques like Onigiri and Lion's Song. His combat prowess places him among the Straw Hats' "Monster Trio," alongside Luffy and Sanji. Training under Mihawk during a two-year timeskip granted him proficiency in Armament and Observation Haki, and he later awakened Conqueror's Haki, learning to infuse it into his blades. His swords include the Wado Ichimonji, inherited from Kuina; Sandai Kitetsu; and Enma, acquired in Wano. He previously wielded Yubashiri and Shusui, returning the latter to Wano as a national treasure. His battles often pit him against the second-strongest foes in story arcs, such as King during the Raid on Onigashima.

Physically, Zoro is muscular and tall, with green hair, three gold earrings, and a signature black bandana tied during serious fights. His body bears numerous scars, notably a diagonal chest wound from Mihawk and self-inflicted ankle wounds from escaping captivity. Post-timeskip, he gained a scar over his left eye and a larger physique. His typical attire includes a green haramaki sash holding his swords, black pants, and boots. Outfits vary by arc: an orange keffiyeh in Arabasta, a yellow jacket in Water 7, samurai garb in Wano, and often an open dark green coat post-timeskip.

Zoro's bounties reflect his growth: 60,000,000 Berries after Arabasta, 120,000,000 after Enies Lobby, 320,000,000 after Dressrosa, and 1,111,000,000 Berries post-Wano. As a Super Rookie and member of the Worst Generation, he gained global infamy. He maintains a contentious rivalry with Sanji, mutual respect with Jinbe, and a mentorship of Chopper, though he chastised the latter for emotional weakness during the Davy Back Fight. He shows little romantic interest but reacts flusteredly to situations involving women, such as Hiyori sleeping on his chest. He remains focused on his goal to surpass Mihawk, a journey intertwined with Luffy's ambition to become Pirate King.
