Description
Rem is the younger twin sister of Ram, both belonging to the nearly extinct Oni race. Born in a hidden village, they faced persecution for their single horns, deemed "defective" by Oni standards. The Witch Cult destroyed their village, severing Ram's horn. Rem experienced a fleeting moment of joy at her sister's incapacitation, breeding a deep-seated inferiority complex and a lifelong drive to compensate by becoming the perfect servant.
After the attack, the sisters became maids at Roswaal Manor. Rem shouldered roughly 80% of the mansion's workload, driven by her need to atone and support Ram, whose power diminished with her lost horn. Her worldview remained narrow, focused solely on Ram and her duties, often prompting impulsive actions to protect her immediate circle. Publicly stoic and polite, she could be unintentionally blunt. She harbored intense hatred for the Witch Cult and could detect the "Witch's miasma," a scent like "blood and death mixed with mud."
During the unnatural cold snap in *Memory Snow*, caused by Puck's magical exertion, Rem performed routine duties at Roswaal Manor. She assisted Subaru Natsuki with chores like mopping and cooking, attributing the cold to seasonal changes. She expressed concern for Subaru's well-being, watching over him as he slept and discussing his postponed date with Emilia. As the cold intensified, she joined Subaru's snow festival plan to distract the villagers. Collaborating with Ram, she helped create the humorous "Subuwaal" snow sculpture, blending Roswaal's and Subaru's features, showcasing rare lightheartedness.
Following Subaru's intervention during Arc 2, where she served as a secondary antagonist, Rem developed unwavering loyalty and romantic feelings for him. She openly confessed her love, becoming one of his most steadfast supporters and viewing him as her "hero," a source of emotional stability during his self-doubt. At Arc 3's conclusion, the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony, Lye Batenkaitos, consumed her name and memories, plunging her into a coma.
She awakened in Arc 6 with amnesia, distrusting everyone—especially Subaru due to the overwhelming Witch's scent clinging to him. She referred to herself vaguely ("I") and to Subaru as "that person," even attempting to strangle him. Gradually, she accepted her name and displayed protectiveness (attacking threats to Subaru) and envy when he interacted with Emilia. Her memories were restored after Roy Alphard regurgitated them, reverting her to calling Subaru "Subaru-kun" and displaying her original devotion.
As an Oni, Rem can manifest a horn, granting superhuman strength (like killing witchbeasts barehanded), though overexertion causes severe recoil. She shares a synesthesia link with Ram, sensing each other's emotions and physical states; this allows Rem to act as Ram's temporary "horn," disrupting her own mana flow. She specializes in water magic, including healing and defensive barriers ("Huma"), deemed "above average but not exceptional" by Roswaal.
