Description
Christina Matsuzaki is the owner and manager of the Matsuzaki Building, the rundown structure that houses the detective office of Juzo Inui, the protagonist of No Guns Life. A resident of the building herself, she serves as the landlady to a small community that includes Juzo, the young boy Tetsuro Arahabaki, and Mary Steinberg. Her most striking characteristic is her flamboyant and unapologetically feminine presentation; she is a transgender woman or male-to-female cross-dresser, often affectionately referred to with terms like okama or male lady. She maintains a glamorous aesthetic with elaborate jewelry, pronounced makeup, and a distinctive hairstyle, and is consistently depicted with a visible mustache and beard stubble alongside her sharp manicured nails. The color of her styled hair is often noted as lilac or purple.

Christina’s personality is a vibrant mix of theatricality, warmth, and impulsive affection. She openly declares herself a beauty and is easily smitten by good-looking individuals, particularly young boys and handsome men. This attraction manifests in boisterous and overwhelming displays of physical fondness, such as aggressive cheek-pinching and leaving lipstick marks from kisses. Upon first meeting Tetsuro, for instance, her affection was so uncontainable that she covered his face in kisses, an impulsive act for which she later apologized, explaining that she simply could not resist his appearance. Despite this sometimes inappropriate exuberance, she is fundamentally a kind and deeply caring individual who treats her tenants almost like family. She frequently organizes communal meals, such as a crab hotpot dinner, to bring everyone together and foster a sense of community. Her role is primarily that of a supportive landlord and a warm, eccentric maternal figure within the gritty and violent world of the story.

Her motivations are simple and grounded. As the owner of the building, she seeks to protect her property and maintain a peaceful home for her tenants. This desire often puts her at odds with the chaos that Juzo’s work as a Resolver inevitably brings. While she is remarkably tolerant of the trouble he causes, overlooking broken windows and doors, major structural damage—such as when a wall of the office is demolished during a confrontation—provokes her visible anger. She will loudly berate those responsible and is not afraid to confront powerful groups like the EMS inspection crews, warning them against causing further damage to her property. Despite these frustrations, her affection for Juzo and the others wins out. She is understanding of his frequent inability to pay rent due to his financial struggles as an Extended, and she often pays for repairs to the building out of her own pocket without holding a grudge.

Christina’s key relationships revolve around her tenants, with her dynamic with Juzo being the most prominent. She acts as a long-suffering but fond benefactor, tolerating his violent lifestyle and poverty while occasionally scolding him like a disappointed parent. Her relationship with Tetsuro is colored by her immediate, doting affection for the boy. Through interactions like shared dinners, she also helps to explain Juzo’s gruff but protective nature to the younger characters, serving as an interpreter of his stoic personality. While she shows leniency toward those she likes, her friendliness can be disarmed by attractiveness, as seen when she softened considerably upon meeting the handsome Extended, Cronen von Wolf.

While Christina does not possess any special combat abilities or superhuman powers like the Extended, she demonstrates a notable ability for maintaining her property and mediating domestic situations. Her development is subtle but present. Initially appearing as a purely comic relief character defined by her oddness and flirtatious behavior, she reveals a more complex and pragmatic side. She is not merely a joke; she is a shrewd business owner, a protective figure, and a resilient person capable of weathering the constant turbulence caused by her extraordinary tenants. A side story reveals a deeper layer to her past, where she hires Juzo to retrieve secret information from a data broker—the files, it turns out, contained sensitive details about her romantic relationship with a very influential man, hinting at a hidden history and a more vulnerable interior life beneath her bombastic exterior.
