Description
Hakase, whose name literally means Professor in Japanese, is a central character in the Saru Getchu ~On Air~ 2nd anime. He is a genius inventor and the creator of many of the series' key technologies, including the Pipo Helmets, the Capture Net, and a teleportation device. As an elderly man with a round build, a grayish-white mustache, and a distinctive balloon-shaped nose, he is easily recognizable. Within the story, he operates primarily from his laboratory, providing essential support for the mission to recapture the mischievous monkeys.
Hakase’s personality is a blend of brilliance and eccentricity. He possesses a strong sense of justice and a kind heart, genuinely dedicated to creating a safe and happy world. However, he is also notably absent-minded, goofy, and prone to dramatic emotional outbursts, often overplaying his actions in a silly manner. While he is a wonderful person with a friendly demeanor, he can be somewhat of an airhead, which sometimes leads to humorous mistakes or forgetfulness, such as accidentally leaving behind a Pipo Helmet that causes trouble. Despite this, moments arise where his profound intelligence and knowledge take precedence, showcasing the depth of his scientific expertise.
As for his background and motivations, Hakase is revealed to be the grandfather of Natsumi, one of the main characters. He is driven by a desire to fix the problems caused by his own inventions, particularly the Pipo Helmets that inadvertently gave monkeys enhanced intelligence and allowed the villainous Specter to rise to power. His primary motivation is to support the young heroes in their quest, constantly working to improve their gadgets and strategies. In the second season, his role remains crucial as he continues to develop new technology to counter evolving threats from Specter and other antagonists. A sign of his importance, his birthday is celebrated in an episode of the second season.
In terms of his role in the story and key relationships, Hakase acts as the team's chief inventor and operator from his lab. He is a trusted friend and ally to the main protagonist Kakeru, providing him with the necessary tools for monkey-catching missions. His relationship with his granddaughter Natsumi is particularly significant, as she often helps him in the lab and acts as a field operator, though Hakase himself has admitted that her navigational skills might surpass his own in certain duties. He is also the creator of Charu, an artificial intelligence assistant whom he initially programmed to be bound to a computer before successfully granting her a mobile physical body and full senses. This act demonstrates his paternal care for his own creations.
Regarding his development and notable abilities, Hakase remains a consistent source of innovation and comic relief throughout the series. His character does not undergo a dramatic transformation but instead provides stability as the genius in the background whose inventions drive the plot forward. His most notable ability is his scientific genius, which manifests in the creation of numerous devices. He is responsible for inventing the Capture Nets used to contain monkeys, the teleporter for rapid deployment, and various other gadgets that are essential for the protagonists' success. He also has the ability to teleport people, showcasing the advanced nature of his technology. While he is the brains of the operation, his absent-minded nature ensures that he remains a fallible and endearing figure rather than an infallible mentor.
