Description
Vassago Casals, recurring in the Sword Art Online narrative under his avatar name PoH, was born in San Francisco's Tenderloin district to a Spanish mother and Japanese father following a transactional encounter. His mother, resentful, named him after an Ars Goetia devil—Vassago, meaning "Prince of Hell." His father intended him as a kidney donor for an ailing half-brother. At fifteen, Vassago agreed to donate in exchange for relocation to Japan, but legal complications funneled him into a Korean crime syndicate. By twenty, he completed nine assassination assignments.
The syndicate deployed Vassago to infiltrate Sword Art Online after it became a death game, tasking him with indirectly assassinating a player. Using an acquired NerveGear, he logged in as PoH, reflecting his given name. Contact with Japanese players reignited his hatred for East Asians due to paternal abandonment. Abandoning his target, PoH founded the player-killing guild Laughing Coffin to instigate widespread murder. He propagated that killing players was permissible since Kayaba Akihiko bore responsibility. PoH later betrayed Laughing Coffin by leaking its hideout to incite a massacre between the guild and clearers, avoiding the conflict.
After SAO's clearance, Vassago murdered his syndicate boss over unpaid compensation and returned to America. He joined a San Diego private military contractor, excelling in VR combat training against National Guard and Navy personnel to earn instructor rank. Dissatisfied with routine, he accepted a contract to raid a Japan Self-Defense Force mega-float and steal a bottom-up AI from Project Alicization. When the JSDF locked the main control room, Vassago and commander Gabriel Miller logged into Underworld. Locked out of Human Empire accounts, Vassago used a Dark Territory Dark Knight account to invade the Human Empire with Dark Territory forces and extract the AI Alice.
During the invasion, PoH wielded his signature Mate Chopper dagger, resembling a Chinese kitchen knife. His appearance featured a facial tattoo and ample black wavy hair, often concealed under a dark hooded poncho in SAO. In Underworld, PoH clashed with Kirito, who transformed his avatar into a cedar tree to prevent logout. Damage to the Fluctlight Acceleration system by Vassago's team triggered Maximum Acceleration, trapping him in accelerated time for subjective years. His deceased physical body was discovered but mysteriously vanished before retrieval during mercenary withdrawal.
