Description
Rinko Kougyoku is a 13-14-year-old junior high school student living in Takaragaseki City with her parents, Mitsuo and Sayuri Kougyoku. She possesses chestnut brown eyes and short red hair in the anime (brown in the manga), typically secured with a heart-shaped yellow hairclip. Her usual attire consists of a lime-colored jacket over a white shirt featuring magenta lines, a dark grey skirt, rose-colored long socks, and pastel brown shoes. She always wears Ruby's Jewel Charm around her neck.

Rinko embodies an ordinary girl filled with dreams, yet she often feels shy and left out, though she eventually overcomes these feelings. She battles acrophobia but finds the courage to conquer it during crucial moments, like climbing to persuade Garnet. A powerful sense of justice compels her to protect others and take risks for her friends. Initially lacking confidence, particularly in academics and public speaking, she gradually gains self-assurance after receiving the Jewel Stick. Her personality includes a tendency for deadpan snark, especially directed at Ruby, and she experiences belligerent sexual tension with her neighbor Akira Nanase, a relationship evolving from sworn enemies to mutual romantic affection.

Partnering with the Jewelpet Ruby under the Four Great Magicians of Jewel Land, her mission is retrieving Jewelpets scattered on Earth. She uses magical tools: the Jewel Pocketbook to awaken Jewelpets from their Jewel Charm state and the Jewel Stick for casting magic. Awakening requires collaboration with Ruby and the phrase "Puri Puri Puririn Purirism! Open! Jewel Heart!". Initially reliant on these items, her magical skills evolve with practice using the Jewel Stick, though controlling her magic independently remains challenging.

Key relationships define her journey. She acts as a protective, though frequently scolding, older sister figure to Ruby, their dynamic maturing into solidarity. Her childhood friend Minami Asaoka provides unwavering support. Her bond with Aoi Arisugawa begins with Aoi's loneliness and deepens into genuine friendship after Rinko persuades her to stay in Japan. Her romantic arc starts with hostility toward Akira Nanase, shifting to mutual affection complicated by her infatuation with the fraudulent prince Andy (later revealed as Dian). This infatuation leads to Dian brainwashing her into a forced marriage, requiring Akira's kiss to break the spell.

Significant events shape her development. Ruby's Jewel Charm lands in her water glass, leading to her recruitment by Keigo Tatewaki to gather Jewelpets. She forms the core team by awakening Garnet with Minami and Sapphie with Aoi. A mid-season upgrade occurs when she obtains the Jewel Stick in episode 26, marking her transition to a full magician. The climax sees Dian exploit her wish for a prince: brainwashing her, orchestrating a wedding to steal her Jewel Stick, and petrifying Akira. This trauma culminates in her tearful confrontation with Dian and a decisive battle where she and her friends restore Dian's true self.

Her background includes childhood memories, such as Minami protecting her during kindergarten and playing the piano. A non-canonical cameo in *Jewelpet the Movie: Sweets Dance Princess* features an alternate version riding in a car with previous protagonists. Her character arc concludes with solidified bonds with Ruby, Minami, Aoi, and Akira, showcasing her growth from a timid dreamer to a determined protector of both worlds.
