Description
Sora Kurumatani serves as the series protagonist. Standing roughly 149-150 cm tall, he has unruly medium-length dark hair and matching dark eyes. His jersey number remains 15 for the Kuzuryū High basketball team. His footwear evolves significantly: beginning in his mother's 'ASICS Japan Pro' sneakers, he later switches to 'Nike Air Zoom Flight 5' and finally 'Nike Air Zoom Brave 3' models, once calling them "my wings".

Born in Nagano Prefecture, Sora's parents are farmer Tomohisa and Yuka, a former All-Japan basketball player whose influence ignited his passion and skills for the sport. Following junior high, he enrolled at Kuzuryū High in Kawasaki to be near his hospitalized mother, living with his barbershop-owning grandmother, Yone. His move strained his relationship with Yuka, who only learned of it through Yone's accidental revelation during a hospital visit. Yuka's condition worsened during the Inter-High District Qualifiers, leading to her death. Sora briefly returned to Nagano to grieve before resuming basketball at Kuzuryū. Academically, he maintains average grades, barely above passing marks.

Personality-wise, Sora is consistently friendly and smiling. His infectious enthusiasm and unwavering determination revitalize Kuzuryū High's dormant boys' basketball team, previously a haven for delinquents uninterested in the sport. His persistence also motivates the Hanazono brothers, who had abandoned basketball since junior high, to rejoin. Despite enduring mockery for his height and being barred from official middle school games, his mother's encouragement to leverage his stature and never give up fueled his resolve. He relishes competition, evident in his excitement for the first practice game against Shinmaruko High.

His primary position is shooting guard, though he occasionally plays point guard as needed. Key skills include a highly accurate one-handed three-point shot and a 'female-style two-handed shot' taught by his mother. While stronger shooting from the right side of the three-point line, opponents exploiting this weakness drives him to diligently improve his left-side shooting. He possesses exceptional deep court vision, strong ball-handling, and effective defensive capabilities, demonstrated by successfully guarding Kitasumi High's Tarou throughout an entire practice game. These technical skills compensate for his lack of height. A skill assessment rates him: Physical Ability 8/10, Technique 10/10, Stamina 8/10, Mental Strength 7/10, Special Ability 10/10.

Character development involves overcoming grief after his mother's death and persistently addressing his physical and technical limitations. His commitment inspires teammates to gradually develop genuine dedication to basketball, shifting the team's aim toward competing at nationals. The etymology of his name reflects his character: "Sora" means "sky, azure, atmosphere," while "Kurumatani" combines "car" (車) and "valley" (谷).
